Camp Renaissance fun stretches from underground to the sky

Release Date: 4/6/2005. Expired: 6/3/2005

The Camp Renaissance experience for 2005 stretches from below the Earth’s surface into outer space, with a lot of fun in between.

A day camp for campers ages 6-14, Camp Renaissance is offered in four one-week sessions this summer by The Renaissance Center in Dickson. Camp weeks are June 13-17, June 20-24, June 27-July 1 and July 11-15.

The camp fee is $145 per child per week and transportation to and from Camp Renaissance will be offered to various areas outside of Dickson County for a minimal fee. Camp buses will make stops in Bellevue, Kingston Springs, East Hickman, Waverly/McEwen and Cunningham/Clarksville during specific camp weeks.

Registration deadline is June 3, but the number of campers each session is limited and spaces are filled on a first-come-first-served basis, with a deposit required to secure a reservation.

Camp Renaissance enters its sixth year as Middle Tennessee’s biggest camp adventure with more activities than ever before. Not only do campers enjoy traditional outdoor activities at the Adventure Camp site, but they also get to enjoy the entertainment and educational opportunities of The Renaissance Center, a world-class education and performing arts center.

Campers will be able to go deep below the Earth’s surface as they explore Ruskin and Jewel caves, two of five natural caves found at the Adventure Camp site on Yellow Creek in northwestern Dickson County. Campers will get to explore the outer reaches of the atmosphere when they participate in a simulated space mission onboard Project Dream Mission, a half-size replica of the NASA space shuttle. Designed with NASA’s assistance, Project Dream Mission allows campers to get a unique experience in a simulated satellite rescue mission.

While most of the camp week is spent at the Adventure Camp site, campers spend a day at The Renaissance Center where they get to enjoy a live theatre production, a show in the unique CyberSphere Digital Theatre and a live science show.

Campers will experience a live theatre production as The Renaissance Center’s Young Actors Studio presents School House Rock Live, a musical based on the popular educational vignettes from Saturday morning television in the 1970s.

The day includes a show in the CyberSphere, the center’s four-story domed theatre that includes the world’s first 360-degree laser projector, a starfield generator that produces 9,000 stars and a 14,000-watt digital SurroundSound system.

The Faraday Science Theatre will host campers for a live show that makes science fun through interactive experiments and shows the application of science throughout daily life.

The summer fun is nonstop at the Adventure Camp site where campers enjoy arts and crafts, a 50-foot rappelling and climbing tower, 400-foot zipline, the largest swimming pool in Dickson County, an archery range, a riflery range, a low-ropes course, a fishing pond, a skeet range, horseshoes, sand volleyball, basketball, soap slide, caving and the Dream Mission space shuttle.

Each camp session concludes with a Parents’ Night on Fridays, in which parents and siblings can visit the Adventure Camp site, enjoy a family cookout and watch as campers receive awards for the week’s accomplishments.

“Camp Renaissance is perhaps the most unique and well-rounded camp experience to be found in Middle Tennessee,” said Paul McCardle, camp director. “No other camp can offer the variety of experiences found through the combination of our Adventure Camp and The Renaissance Center. Our enrollment continues to grow each year and we see many of our campers return not only year to year, but for several sessions each summer.”
