Tennessee’s Wild Side, a weekly outdoor adventure television program produced by The Renaissance Center with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and The Nature Conservancy, has been recognized with a 2008 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award.
The Emmy-winning program, which airs on PBS stations across the state and Kentucky Educational Television, was honored in the Natural Heritage Conservation category in the annual awards presented by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
TDEC Commissioner Jim Fyke announced 14 award winners in May and the awards were presented at a ceremony in Nashville in June.
“Taking care of our precious natural resources is essential to preserving Tennessee’s outdoor tradition,” said Gov. Phil Bredesen. “I want to express my congratulations to each of these individuals, organizations and groups whose stewardship is helping us protect Tennessee’s air, land and water.”
The Tennessee Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards are the most prestigious environmental and conservation awards in the state. For more than 20 years, the awards have been presented to individuals and organizations that make great contributions to the conservation of the state’s wildlife and related natural resources, the natural elements upon which all life depends.
“The purpose of the Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards is to recognize outstanding achievements by individuals, businesses, organizations, educational institutions, and agencies for successful environmental projects and conservation measures. Also to promote leadership by example and in turn increase conservation of the natural resources of the State of Tennessee its wildlife, forests, soils, water, natural heritage, parks and recreation, and air,” said Fyke. “The awards are designed to bring about a greater knowledge and awareness of environmental and conservation practices and projects, and to give proper recognition to those persons and organizations that make outstanding contributions to the natural resource welfare of their community and the state.”
Tennessee’s Wild Side was recognized for a series of programs produced by Alan Griggs highlighting species and lands of high conservation significance. During its eight seasons, Tennessee’s Wild Side has produced more than 130 shows highlighting conservation and the environment.
The program has won five Midsouth Regional Emmy Awards, including two for Best Magazine Program and a 2008 award for Best Magazine/Special for A Plan for Preservation, a special written, produced and hosted by Griggs. It also was named best outdoors program by the Association for Conservation Information in 2005.
