Release Date: 3/15/2004. Expired: 4/16/2004

An American theatre classic, word processing basics, drawing the human figure and an April Fool’s Day concert highlight the Senior Days activities in April at The Renaissance Center.

Senior Days are special activities offered free or at special prices for patrons age 55 and older.

The month kicks off in song as the Music Department presents April Fool’s Follies in the rotunda at 1 p.m. April 1. The free concert features various members of the center’s full-time and adjunct music faculty.

Senior Director of Music Elaine Sherrill said the recital will consist of a very eclectic collection of performances, from classical to jazz, from spirituals to contemporary pop. The faculty members will perform individually, in duets and various ensembles, even presenting some original material. Performances will include voice, piano, violin, guitar, flute, mandolin, harp and harmonica, just to name a few.

For those who are unable to attend during the day, the faculty will perform again at 7 p.m. that same day in another free concert in the rotunda that is open to the general public.

For more information, contact Sherrill at (615)740-5545.

The April 1 concert is preceded by the free, guided tour of The Renaissance Center at 11 a.m.

The Visual Arts Department presents a Senior Drawing Workshop on April 12 that will focus on Life Drawing with a Live Model. The workshop is 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and is limited to 10 students. There is a $10 tuition for seniors.

The workshop will teach the basics of drawing the human figure with a live model. For more information, contact Camille Hickerson, senior director of Visual Arts, at (615)740-5565.

The Renaissance Repertory Theatre Company presents a special Senior Days performance of Arthur Miller’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Death of a Salesman at 1 p.m. April 12. Tickets for seniors are $5.

Hal Partlow, managing director of the Rep Co., portrays Willy Loman, a salesman facing the reality that the American dream doesn’t always come true in what is recognized as one of the greatest works in American theatre.

The Rep Co. also will present Death of a Salesman in two special performances open to the public at 7 p.m. April 16 and 17. Tickets for those shows are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $7 for children under 13. Death of a Salesman is one of the Rep Co.’s field trip offerings for high school students this spring.

The Information Technology Department of The Renaissance Center presents a Microsoft Word Basics Workshop at 10 a.m. April 16. The two-hour workshop is free, but space is limited so reservations are required.

The workshop teaches the fundamentals of using the most popular word-processing program in the center’s computer lab and taught by Clay McKinney, a Microsoft certified professional and solutions developer, as well as webmaster for The Renaissance Center.
