Camp Renaissance offers new overnight experience in Ruskin Cave

Release Date: 4/26/2006. Expired: 6/2/2006

Camp Renaissance 2006 includes a new opportunity for campers to enjoy the fun of an overnight stay that includes a cookout, bonfire, hayrides and sleeping inside a cave. And parents can experience the fun, too.

Entering its seventh year, Camp Renaissance is a weeklong daycamp for boys and girls ages 6-14 that is offered as a program of The Renaissance Center in Dickson. Camp Renaissance has twice been voted one of the top daycamp experiences in Middle Tennessee by the readers of Nashville Parent magazine.

Offered in four one-week sessions, Camp Renaissance is a unique camping experience that combines traditional outdoor camp adventures with the world-class entertainment and educational opportunities at The Renaissance Center. Sessions for 2006 are June 19-23, June 26-30, July 10-14 and July 17-21. The deadline for registration is June 2.

The new overnight camp experience will be offered on Thursday nights of each session. Campers have the option of staying at the Adventure Camp site at the former Ruskin Cave resort complex where they will enjoy additional activities such as hayrides, story telling, a bonfire, cookout, games, movie and more. Campers will spend the night inside Ruskin Cave.

“Sleeping inside Ruskin Cave will be a totally unique experience,” said Paul McCardle, camp director. “No matter how hot it gets outside, Ruskin Cave remains a steady 72 degrees. With improvements we have made to the camp site, we now have a new 3,000-square-foot pool house that includes new restroom and shower facilities.”

The overnight camp experience is optional for campers for an additional fee of $30. Campers will need to bring a sleeping bag or other bedding appropriate for sleeping on the concrete floor of the cave, toiletries, extra towel and clothes for the following day. Camp Renaissance will provide a hamburger cookout on Thursday as well as breakfast and lunch for overnight campers on Friday.

“One of the truly special aspects of our new overnight experience is that parents have the option of enjoying it with their children,” McCardle said. “Parents of young campers who might be experiencing their first overnight camp can be there with them. And parents who just want to enjoy the experience with their kids will find that it can make for a special time together. You’d be surprised at how many parents ask about when they will get to come to Camp Renaissance after hearing about it from their children. Now is their chance.”

Camp Renaissance days are filled with swimming, rappelling, rock climbing, caving, arts and crafts, archery, riflery, skeet shooting, fishing, soap slide, volleyball, kickball, basketball, tubing and more. New activities for 2006 include living history re-enactments, nature studies and a fishing tournament. Camp Renaissance also is the exclusive home of Project Dream Mission, a one-of-a-kind replica of NASA’s space shuttle, in which campers get the experience of conducting a satellite rescue mission in outer space.

Campers spend part of each week at The Renaissance Center, where they experience a live theatrical production, a science theatre show, planetarium show, laser music show and other programs.

Each week of Camp Renaissance concludes with a Parents Night on Fridays. Parents and families are invited to the Adventure Camp for a cookout, tours of the camp and awards program.

Transportation is provided free to and from the campsite from The Renaissance Center each morning and afternoon except for Friday afternoons when parents come to the Adventure Camp. Bus transportation is provided for a $25 fee from Red Caboose Park on Highway 70 in Bellevue each week and additional bus stops could be added to other areas in surrounding counties.

Tuition for Camp Renaissance is $155 per camper per week. The overnight camp is an additional $30 per camper. Parents can participate in the overnight camp experience for $30 per person.

The number of campers is limited each session and more than 150 campers are already registered for this summer. Camp reservations can be made by completing a pre-registration form available on the Camp Renaissance Web site (http://camp.rcenter.org) and paying a deposit of $75. The remainder of the camp tuition must be paid before the camp session begins.
