Sherrill brings Christmas variety show back to Renaissance Center for 2 performances

Release Date: 10/20/2004. Expired: 11/20/2004

After a one-year break, Elaine Sherrill is bringing back her Christmas variety show at The Renaissance Center for two performances on Nov. 20.

Debuting in 2000, A Dickson, Tennessee, Christmas evolved over three years to include musical performances, comedy skits and special guests. Sherrill promises that the 2004 version will be that and more.

Performances are 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Performance Hall. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $6 for children under 13. The afternoon show will be taped by the center’s award-winning Multimedia Department for broadcast on the Renaissance Channel (Comcast 19 in Dickson).

“We took a break from the show last year and people said they were so disappointed,” Sherrill said of the decision to bring it back. “The demand was just so great that we decided to bring it back and crank up the entertainment.”

A Dickson, Tennessee, Christmas 2004 will grow into what Sherrill calls “a full fine arts show” by involving The Renaissance Center’s Music, Visual Arts and Theatre departments.

“I’m excited about including the theatre and arts departments,” said Sherrill, who is still planning and hatching new ideas for the show.

She said the new show will include jazz band-flavored orchestrations featuring members of The Renaissance Center’s Jazz Band, directed by Darin Cochran. Also being planned are some of Amy Grant’s popular holiday songs for people who miss the popular singer’s Christmas show.

“We also want to give it a flavor of Bing Crosby’s shows back when he was doing Christmas television specials,” Sherrill said.

The variety show will be complete with musical and comedy skits, featuring members of the Renaissance Repertory Theatre Company and the Renaissance Players.

Sherrill and Assistant Music Director Kelli Workman previewed one of their skits during the annual Jimmy Awards ceremony in August. Portraying Cooky and Candy Swingy, respectively, along with accompaniment by Elton Jeff (Director of Music Technology Jeffery Martin), the duo lampoons the Sweeney Sisters, a popular Saturday Night Live skit about two lounge singers.

“This show will have it all, from laughs to touching moments, from holiday standards to contemporary tunes,” Sherrill said.
