Dulcimer champion Larry Conger and friends present concert at Renaissance Center

Former national champion dulcimer player Larry Conger returns to The Renaissance Center for two concerts and a pair of workshops in September.
The Paris, Tenn., resident, a renowned builder, player and instructor of the Appalachian mountain dulcimer, will present a free performance at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, as part of the center’s Senior Days activities for patrons 55 and older.
Conger and other guest artists will present an evening concert of solos, duets and enthralling ensemble performances at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10. Tickets for Larry Conger and Friends are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $6 for children under 13.
The winner of the 1998 National Mountain Dulcimer Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kan., Conger will lead two workshops on Sept. 10.
The Waltzes in D-A-d Tuning Workshop will feature finger dances in ¾ time for the intermediate level player. Participants will learn to apply embellishments such as hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides in order to make arrangements smoother.
The workshop is 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, and tuition is $40.
The Music for Dulcimer Ensemble Workshop will feature two-part dulcimer arrangements suitable for advancing beginners and intermediate level players using standard dulcimers in D-A-d turning. Participants will learn useful tips on arranging for multiple dulcimers while learning some great new tunes.
The workshop is 1:30-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, and tuition is $40.
Anyone registering for both workshops will receive a $5 discount.
Conger operates a private music studio in Paris, teaching piano, guitar and mountain dulcimer. He is active as a participating artist in the Tennessee Arts Commission Arts in Education program and the Kentucky Arts Council Teacher Incentive Program, presenting dulcimer programs in the public schools.
A graduate of the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor of Music degree, Conger has been a professional musician for more than 25 years, performing at dulcimer festivals around the country and also working as a music director for several Baptist churches.
In 1995, Conger won the Southern Regional Mountain Dulcimer Championship at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Ark. The following year he teamed with Jim Curley of Kansas City to win the Southern Regional Dulcimer Ensemble Championship.
Conger has several dulcimer books and recordings to his credit, including contributions to Great Players of the Mountain Dulcimer and Masters of the Mountain Dulcimer II, compilation CDs featuring many of today’s top dulcimer artists.
