Solid Gospel concert series presents The McKameys at Renaissance Center
Release Date: 8/3/2006. Expired: 8/17/2006
Originally formed in 1954 as a trio of sisters - Dora, Peg and Carol - The McKameys are nearing their fifth decade of spreading love and blessings through the music they sing. Even though there have been several changes in the group’s makeup, the wonderful harmonies, great songs and sheer joy of singing has never vanished.
The McKameys will perform at The Renaissance Center in Dickson Thursday, Aug. 17. Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert are $14. The show is presented as part of the Solid Gospel 105-FM Concert Series in cooperation with The Salem Music Network Inc.
The McKameys have enjoyed tremendous success since their beginning, but most of the national recognition has come within the last decade. The group had its first number-one release in 1984 with Who Put the Tears in the Eyes of the Lamb.
They have since gone on to record 15 number-one songs and almost every single has charted in The Singing News Top 40 Chart. They have won two Song of the Year awards from The Singing News (God on the Mountain in 1989 and Arise in ’94) and a Favorite Video Award for Hometown Live in 2003.
Ruben Bean joined the group as guitar player in 1957 and later joined the family when he married Peg McKamey. In 1971, both Carol and Dora left the group due to family obligations and Peg and Ruben’s daughters, Connie and Sheryl, took their places. Sheryl left in 1985 and Carol McKamey Woodard rejoined her sister and niece. Connie’s husband, Roger Fortner, plays guitars for the group.
Peg McKamey Bean has remained with the group since its inception and has been named Favorite Female Singer by The Singing News seven times.
Based out of Clinton, Tenn., The McKameys still travel extensively performing 140-150 shows each year.
