Linda Davis to pick from workshops for performance showcase
Release Date: 8/15/2008. Expired: 9/20/2008
Country music superstar Linda Davis will select 10 students from her Sept. 19 Stage/Performance 101 Workshops to perform in concert in the Performance Hall at The Renaissance Center in Dickson on Friday, Sept. 26.
Tickets for the 7 p.m. showcase are $10.
A Grammy-winning singer, Davis mentors and tutors aspiring performers with advice on performance techniques, movement, charisma and stage presence in her workshops. After her two workshop sessions, she will select her top 10 participants who will get the opportunity to put what they have learned into practice in a showcase hosted by Kelli Workman, veteran studio singer and assistant director of the Music Department at The Renaissance Center.
“This is a great opportunity for aspiring performers to not only get one-on-one time with a Grammy-winning recording artist, but also to then display their skills on stage,” said Workman. “Experience is always the greatest teacher and Linda brings more than 20 years in the music industry to her workshops, then the chance to perform only adds to each participant’s experience level.”
Eight albums, 10 videos and countless live performances around the globe with fellow artists Reba McEntire, Kenny Rogers, Brooks and Dunn and Garth Brooks make Davis a sought-after consultant and mentor for up-and-coming artists. Talent must be deep in Davis’ gene pool as not only is she a top performer, but her daughter Hillary Scott is part of the hot new trio Lady Antebellum, named Top New Group at the 2008 Academy of Country Music Awards.
"My goal is to help each client feel comfortable in his or her own skin,” Davis says. “The stage is yours to command. It's not enough to just sing or play well; the audience wants to feel at ease with you. When you're comfortable, they're comfortable.”
At each session (whether group or private), Davis provides critique and direction based on tried and true methods that have served her well throughout the course of her career. Realizing that each artist has unique abilities, as well as goals to consider, Davis tailors her advice to help each individual reach his own expectations and potential. The student should be prepared with tracks or instruments; wardrobe consultation is optional.
The Stage/Performance 101 Workshop is being offered in two sessions on Friday, Sept. 19, and each session is limited to 15 participants. The sessions are 3-6 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. and tuition is $75.
After the workshops, Davis will select at least 10 participants to perform in the following week’s showcase. Unlike previous years, Davis’ schedule will not allow her to perform as part of the showcase.
