Don’t miss Jazz Inspired Clarinet Repertoire

Release Date: 4/9/2009. Expired: 4/11/2009

The Renaissance Center is pleased to present Music Faculty, Lauren Winkens’ Jazz-Inspired Clarinet Repertoire on Saturday, April 11th, 2009 at 3 PM.

Come hear how the swingin’ licorice stick made its mark in the world of classical music. The program will include works by Bolcom, Copland, Harvey and Stravinsky through such songs as I Got Rhythm, Summertime and It Ain’t Necessarily So.

In the hustle and bustle of the early 20th century, the American “melting pot” gave birth to a uniquely American form of music: jazz.  Listeners could not get enough of jazz’s syncopation and irregular rhythms, intoxicating use of dominant seventh chords and “blue notes,” and tuneful melodies.  The call and response style of the jazz bands with their loud brass sections, lacy clarinet obbligato on top, a tight rhythm section, and walking bass lines also drove listeners mad with excitement.  Inevitably, some composers of “high art” classical music were overcome with jazz’s infectious sounds.  As an integral member of early jazz and swing bands, the clarinet is featured in many classical composers’ jazz-tinted compositions, and although some refer to jazz as a “pop music,” these works are important standards in the clarinet repertoire.

Lauren Winkens, a native of Houston, Texas, is a free-lance clarinetist in Middle Tennessee. She has performed across the United States as well as Belgium, England and Japan. Winkens has performed with the Carolina Pops, Fayetteville Symphony and The Renaissance Center’s Gaslight Dinner Theatre. She is a founding member of Una Voce, a North Carolina based award-winning clarinet quartet.
