Sherrill presents 3rd annual Christmas variety show at Renaissance Center

Release Date: 11/26/2002. Expired: 12/9/2002

Elaine Sherrill continues the tradition of a Christmas-themed variety show complete with a live band and holiday musical favorites when she presents A Dickson, Tennessee Christmas in The Renaissance Center’s Performance Hall on Dec. 9.

The show began two years ago as a special program for the center’s Senior Days but has become so popular it will now be presented twice and is open to the public. Shows on Dec. 9 will be at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 13. The shows are videotaped by the center’s Multimedia Department and broadcast on the Local Access Cable Channel (Comcast 19) during the remainder of the holiday season.

In addition to performing traditional holiday favorites, Sherrill, a professional vocalist and pianist who toured with Faith Hill and performed on the General Jackson Showboat, is joined by several special guests.

Backing up Sherrill will be a band of accomplished professional musicians from Nashville. On guitar for the third year is Sherrill’s husband, Norris, who plays guitar for country singer Billy Ray Cyrus. Norris Sherrill also performed with his wife in her Winter Time Blues show in the Gaslight Dinner Theatre.

Billy Copeland, drummer for Cyrus, and Dennis Crouch, bassist for the Nashville Bluegrass Band, will also be part of the band. Crouch and NBB played a sold-out show at The Renaissance Center in May and were part of the O, Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack and recent popular tour.

Three-time national champion harmonica player Glenn Woodland, also known as Wailin’ Wood, joins the band. The White Bluff resident is an adjunct teacher at the center and will have several of his CDs available for purchase at the show.

Other guests for A Dickson, Tennessee Christmas are scheduled to include:

Jennifer and Michael McLain of Dickson from the popular bluegrass group The McLains, which performed at the center in October. Accomplished banjo, guitar and mandolin players as well as vocalists, the McLains also will have CDs available;

Carol McClure and Parker Ramsay, a mother/son harp/piano duo. McClure is an internationally known concert harpist who teaches at her own school in Nashville as well as at The Renaissance Center and has written her own instruction curriculum. Ramsay is an accomplished pianist who performed at the center’s 3rd anniversary celebration and will be featured at the Christmas Super Saturday celebration on Dec. 14;

The Renaissance Repertory Co. actors will present scenes from the current Gaslight Dinner Theatre production of Uh-oh, Here Comes Christmas, which has already sold out all but one of six scheduled December shows as well as five special private bookings in the month, and;

Lora Brown, director of Strings at The Renaissance Center, will play fiddle and Harvey Earls, director of Piano, and Chris Greene, minister of Music at First United Methodist Church in Dickson, also will perform.

“We started this show just as something fun and entertaining for the holidays for our Senior Days, but quickly found that it is growing into something everyone can enjoy at this special time of the year,” said Sherrill, director of Music at The Renaissance Center. “With the evening show added, we hope that more people will have the opportunity to boost their Christmas spirit with a lot of wonderful music and a few laughs.”
