Guitar Recital is a “Winner” of an Evening

Release Date: 10/1/2000. Expired: 10/13/2000

Andrew Winner returns to Renaissance Center for encore performance

A master of music in guitar performance, Andrew Winner returns to The Renaissance Center Performance Hall on Oct. 13, 2000 at 7 p.m.

As director of Guitar Instruction at the center, Winner teaches group and solo classes that remain full semester after semester. He also teaches at Travecca Nazarene University in Nashville, and currently holds a temporary teaching position at Western Kentucky University.

A native of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Winner did not begin playing guitar until the age of 19. He acquired the guitar through a series of trade-offs with a friend, started playing it for fun and eventually fell in love with the instrument, even skipping classes at college to play it.

“I started thinking that maybe I needed to change my major at this point,” Winner recalls fondly. “This is really funny considering the extent of my musical background was 6 months of saxophone in junior high school and getting kicked out of choir in elementary school!”

He received his Bachelor of Music in guitar performance from Western Kentucky University where he received numerous departmental awards. He received a Master of Music in guitar performance from Austin Peay State University with honors.

Winner also composes, arranges and performs original music for programs on The Renaissance Center’s local cable access shows and theatre performances.

Winner and his wife, Julie, who hails from Cincinnati, Ohio, have 4 children. Balancing three teaching positions in addition to being a father of 4 keeps him busy, Winner admits, particularly since he is dedicated to both family and teaching.

“I like teaching at The Renaissance Center because I have a variety of students, from accomplished musicians to beginners,” explains Winner. “As a teacher, this makes me think about how to approach things differently for each student depending on individual experience and ability.

“I have had students that have gone on to college to major in music from here and several students that have been with me since I started teaching at the center and that is very rewarding.”

“Andrew Winner in recital will truly be a ‘winner’ of an evening for music lovers of all types,” said Brad Diamond director of Performing Arts.

Tickets are available now for the Oct. 13 show at the center for $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children under 13. Admission is free to music students at the center.
