Belmont Chorale to perform at The Renaissance Center
Release Date: 3/29/2002. Expired: 4/15/2002
In its continuing effort to bring a variety of music genres to the community through its Recitals in the Rotunda series, The Renaissance Center presents the Belmont Chorale Monday evening, April 15.
The Belmont Chorale is one of the earliest performing ensembles in Belmont University’s shining musical history. Conducted by Edward Scruggs, the chorale has toured across the United States as well as abroad, and has produced several recordings.
The chorale is an auditioned ensemble open to all students and performs choral masterpieces primarily from the sacred field of choral literature. Membership requires a commitment for the entire academic year.
Besides conducting the chorale and the Oratorio Chorus, Scruggs teaches courses in both graduate and undergraduate choral conducting. His choirs have performed for both ACDA and GMEA conferences. Prior to his appointment at Belmont, he held positions as director of Choral Activities at the University of Georgia, the Northside School of the Arts and Peachtree High School in Atlanta. He has conducted all-state choirs and music festivals throughout the United States.
Active in several professional organizations, Scruggs has served on the ACDA Board of Directors and is past president of the Chorister’s Guild in Georgia. He earned his BA and MM degrees from the University of Tennessee, an MCM degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and completed his Ph.D. at Florida State University. He has written articles that have been published in journals both in the field of education and church music.
The recital is 7 p.m. Monday, April 15, in the rotunda at The Renaissance Center. Admission is free.
