Community, Jazz Bands to honor veterans

Release Date: 11/8/2001. Expired: 11/13/2001

The Renaissance Center’s Community Band and Jazz Band will take the Performance Hall stage at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, for a special concert in honor of America’s veterans.

Instructor Darin Cochran said the bands were formed especially for The Renaissance Center and include more than two dozen amateur and professional musicians who enjoy performing together.

“The community band was started when the center opened,” Cochran said. “It seems to be growing quite a bit, especially over the last few weeks. It’s made up of adults in the community and a few high school kids.”

The program set for Nov. 13 will be a combination of traditional band music and patriotic music, Cochran said.

“There will be a special tribute to veterans,” he said. “We do concert band, classical oriented music and then we do jazz so it will be a mixture of both those things. You might call it big band jazz.”

Participation in the bands is free and members must provide their own instruments. They present an opportunity for adults who learned to play an instrument to continue performing in a group. No audition is required and both groups perform two to three concerts a year.

The Community Band rehearses 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays. The Jazz Band rehearses 8-9 p.m. Tuesdays. Both are directed by Cochran who is the band director at Nashville Christian School.

Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults and $3 for children under 13. For more information or to purchase tickets call The Renaissance Center at (615)740-5600.

The Renaissance Center is located at 855 Highway 46 South in Dickson, just 35 minutes west of Nashville.
