Community talent to take Renaissance Center stage

Release Date: 4/23/2002. Expired: 5/9/2002

The Performance Hall at The Renaissance Center will be filled with music as the center’s community choirs and bands perform several concerts next month.

On May 7 and 9 the three community choirs will present performances at 7 p.m., and the center’s Community Concert Band and Jazz Band will perform at 7 p.m. May 14.

The Adult Community Chorus is comprised of community members and gives amateur and experienced adult singers the opportunity to participate in a well-trained vocal ensemble. The Children’s Choir is a treble ensemble for third through sixth grade, while the Training Choir is a beginning group for first and second grades and prepares the students for admittance into the Children’s Choir.

“Our Community Choir performances are always feasts for the ears,” said Elaine Sherrill, senior director of Music at The Renaissance Center. “The members are so fortunate to be directed by Jenny Diamond, a very talented choral conductor and vocalist in her own right. She’s equally adept at coaxing the young ones, developing skills in the school-aged children and challenging the adults.”

The Community Concert Band presents local musicians an opportunity to dig out those old horns from the closet and play in a band. The band is open to both amateur and professional musicians. The Community Jazz Band is dedicated to quality musical performance while maintaining a strong sense of community.

“The members of our two community bands represent a wide spectrum of professions,” Sherrill said. “We have a regional manager for Burger King, several local band directors and even a member of James Brown’s band!

“Our Community Jazz Band is good enough to play professionally. Selected members will be playing in this summer’s Community Theatre production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat here at The Renaissance Center. Other members have recently been asked to play for a wedding reception. With the addition of ballroom dance classes to our summer class offerings, it’s my goal to schedule the Jazz Band for a community dance in the near future.”

All Renaissance Center ensembles are open to the public. Groups meet once a week in preparation for concerts in the center’s Performance Hall. The performances are also recorded for broadcast on Dickson’s cable access Channel 19.

Tickets for the performances are $5 adults and $3 seniors and children.

To purchase tickets call The Renaissance Center at (615)740-5600. For more information on the ensembles call Sherrill at (615)740-5567 or (615)740-5545.

The Renaissance Center is located at 855 Highway 46 South in Dickson, just 35 minutes west of Nashville on Interstate 40 at exit 172.
