Release Date: 4/15/2004. Expired: 5/1/2004

Middle and high school bands from across the region will be competing in the 1st annual Renaissance Center Concert and Jazz Band Festival to be held at The Renaissance Center in Dickson April 30-May 1.

The bands will compete in two divisions - Middle School and High School - before professional judges who will present awards for superior and excellent ratings. There also will be awards for outstanding jazz soloists.

“There is a wealth of wonderful bands at schools throughout Middle Tennessee and this festival gives them not only a chance to compete and display their skills, but also provides people of the area a chance to enjoy these talented students,” said Jeff Martin, director of Music Technology at The Renaissance Center and coordinator for the festival. “Several midstate bands have competed and performed on the national level and this festival will bring many of them together for two days of great music.”

Each band will prepare three pieces contrasting in nature but this festival will not include a sight-reading component. Judging will be conducted following the Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association concert festival guidelines.

The entry fee is $125 for middle school bands and $150 for high school bands. To enter, contact Martin at (615)740-5563.

The competition will be conducted Friday, April 30, and Saturday, May 1, in The Renaissance Center’s Performance Hall.

As an added treat for the participating bands, each member will receive a ticket to the Saturday night concert featuring the internationally acclaimed Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble. For 36 years this ensemble has toured the world and recently released its 11th recording, featuring compositions especially commissioned for the group.

The Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble presents its concert in the Performance Hall at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 1. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children under 13.
