Classical guitarist Katahn kicks off free recital series Feb. 10

Release Date: 2/3/2003. Expired: 2/10/2003

The Renaissance Center’s Recitals in the Rotunda series kicks off its 2003 schedule with classical guitarist David Katahn on Feb. 10.

A resident of Hickman County, Katahn will present classical pieces and hymns in a free performance in the center’s rotunda at 7 p.m.

The program will include guitar arrangements of three classical hymns, guitar studies from the 19th century and other works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Agustin Barrios. Katahn’s vocal quartet will appear to sing Bach’s arrangements of the three hymns.

Born in Hartford, Conn., Katahn lived in New York and North Carolina while his father completed his university studies. After moving to Nashville at age 10, Katahn developed an interest in rock and blues music and played in numerous music ensembles.

After leaving home and traveling to New York City, Katahn worked as a shipping clerk on the lower east side of Manhattan. He became a follower of an Indian guru and moved to the Atlanta area where he continued to work in the shipping and receiving field at Farmbest Foods.

Katahn said he became a Christian in 1980 and decided to complete his education, earning A.E. and B.E. degrees in electrical engineering from Nashville Tech and Vanderbilt University, respectively.

His musical tastes gradually became more inclined toward sacred and classical music, leading him to earn a Bachelor of Music in guitar performance at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt in 1995.

Katahn said he developed a “sincere interest” in choral singing and sang with the Blair Chorale and Covenant Presbyterian Church choir.

Since then, he has compiled a guitar hymnal and continues to play and sing at various churches, while pursuing various avocations including carpentry and woodworking.

Katahn’s mother Enid is an accomplished pianist and professor of piano at Blair School of Music. She has performed twice previously at The Renaissance Center with partner Amy Dorfman and returns for a solo program when the Recitals in the Rotunda series continues Feb. 24.
