Aliquo Quartet comes to The Renaissance Center
Release Date: 10/10/2001. Expired: 10/22/2001
The Don Aliquo Quartet will perform Monday, Oct. 22, in the rotunda at The Renaissance Center as the fourth performance in the Fall 2001 Recitals in the Rotunda series.
The quartet features Aliquo, assistant professor for Saxophone and Jazz Studies at Middle Tennessee State University, Dana Landry, Erik Applegate and Jim White.
Originally from Pennsylvania, where he is still one of Pittsburgh’s most popular and respected jazz musicians, Aliquo moved to the Nashville area to teach in 1999. He received undergraduate and advanced degrees at Duquesne University and studied at the Berklee College of Music.
In the past two years he has performed at several prestigious venues, including a performance at the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference in New York City. He is a sought after jazz clinician and has given master classes at universities including Loyola, Carnegie-Mellon, Butler and James Madison.
In addition to his independent endeavors, Aliquo has performed with internationally celebrated artists including David Leibman, Claudio Roditi, Louie Bellson, Buddy Rich, Herbie Mann, Charlie Haden and Doc Cheatham. He has been featured on more than 15 jazz recordings. He is also active as a classical saxophonist and is a member of the Stones River Chamber Players.
His two self-produced albums of mostly original compositions serve as a statement of his own personal style.
“Really, with all jazz players, it’s your own style and sound, your uniqueness that is important,” Aliquo said. “I wanted to expand the sound and style I had developed over the years by writing my own music for a largely improvised jazz, modern jazz, concept. The evolution of my ideas and sound concepts was a natural product of writing. That’s why I decided to do the first CD. And with the success of that first one, I just kept it going.”
Aliquo has a natural affinity for connecting with students in the classroom as well as the professionals he leads on the bandstand. He expects much and gets it. And whether perfectly punchy or romantically raucous, Aliquo and his sax connect with serious jazz fans everywhere.
Aliquo and friends will perform in The Renaissance Center’s rotunda at 7 p.m. Oct. 22. Admission is free.
Recitals in the Rotunda is a series of free classical performances every other Monday night in The Renaissance Center’s rotunda. The performances feature faculty and accomplished students from area universities as well as professional musicians and groups.
