Legend Lynn Anderson concert taped for DVD

Release Date: 7/21/2004. Expired: 8/27/2004

Country music legend Lynn Anderson comes to the stage of The Renaissance Center Aug. 27 for a concert to be taped for video and DVD release.

Tickets for the show are $14.

Best known for her 1970 smash hit Rose Garden, Anderson is not only an award-winning singer and one of the first country artists to “cross over” onto the pop charts, but also is a champion equestrienne.

“Lynn Anderson is one of the top-ranked female vocalists in any genre of music,” said Steve Hall, senior director of The Renaissance Center’s award-winning Multimedia Department, which is producing the concert video with Stephen Singer of Ocean Lights Media. “Her popularity spans more than four decades and reaches fans of both country and pop music. We are excited to bring Lynn to The Renaissance Center for what will truly be a magical performance.”

A North Dakota native who was raised in California, Anderson attributes her love of country music to her mother, songwriting great Liz Anderson, who penned hits such as The Fugitive and (My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers for Merle Haggard. As a teenager, Lynn Anderson began her singing career by entering a contest in Sacramento sponsored by the Country Corners radio program.

By the time she turned 20, Anderson had been with a national recording company for three years and was a regular on a top-rated network TV show. When she signed a contract with Lawrence Welk, she became the only country singer featured on national television at the time.

In 1970, Anderson moved to Nashville and began turning out a steady stream of well-received recordings. During this time, she and producer Glenn Sutton recorded Joe South’s Rose Garden. The song shot to the top of the country charts and cracked the top five on the pop charts, transforming the young singer into a national celebrity. More hits followed, including a top 10 duet with Gary Morris.

The album Rose Garden earned Anderson 16 gold albums worldwide and went platinum in the United States. Anderson won the Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and an Academy of Country Music Award for Best Female Artist.

Anderson’s list of hits includes I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool, Fool Me, Listen to a Country Song, Cry, What a Man My Man Is, You’re My Man, How Can I Unlove You, Top of the World, Snowbird and others.

Her music awards include Favorite Female Artist from the American Music Awards in 1974, CMA Female Vocalist of the Year in 1971, Academy of Country Music Top Female Vocalist in 1967 and ’70 and her 1970 Grammy.

She’s had eight number one singles, 18 top-10 songs and more than 50 top 40 releases, selling millions of records around the world.

She has sung for five U.S. Presidents and the Queen of England, has been featured on numerous TV shows, acted in a Movie of the Week, hosted her own CBS TV special and the American Rose Society created a hybrid tea rose (cream edged in pink) and named it The Lynn Anderson Rose.

An accomplished horsewoman, Anderson has won 16 National Championships, eight World Championships and several celebrity titles in cutting horse competitions and works extensively with Special Riders of Animaland, a horseback riding therapy program for children.
