Recital series continues with Michael and Sandra Arndt

The Recitals in the Rotunda series at The Renaissance Center continues Monday, Oct. 21, with the Golden Sounds of Brass, featuring solos and chamber pieces for brass instruments.

The series features professional musicians, faculty and accomplished students from area universities. The concerts are free and begin at 7 p.m.

The Oct. 21 recital will feature Michael Arndt on trumpet accompanied by Sandra Arndt on piano.

Michael Arndt is an assistant professor of trumpet at Middle Tennessee State University. Having recently finished course work for a Doctor of Music Arts degree at Arizona State University (ASU), Arndt joins the MTSU School of Music faculty as the new instructor of trumpet. At ASU Arndt played in the graduate brass quintet and was a teaching assistant for the trumpet studio.

His undergraduate degree was earned at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. Arndt completed his graduate studies with a Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota and a Performance Certificate from DePaul University in Chicago. During the course of his education he has studied with David Hickman, John Hagstrom, Gary Bordner, David Baldwin, Keith Benjamin and Philip Clark.

Arndt maintains a career as an active performer, teacher and clinician. While in Arizona he was the 1st trumpet of the Sonoran Brass Quintet. He also performed frequently with the Arizona Opera, Symphony of the West Valley and the Desert Chamber Musicians. During the summer months, he serves on the faculty of the International Music Camp and is a member of the Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra. He performs regularly with orchestras throughout the country including the Cincinnati Symphony, National Repertory Orchestra and many others.

He has also recently joined the Murfreesboro Philharmonic as third trumpet. In February 2002, Arndt made his first solo recital tour with his wife and pianist, Sandra Arndt. The tour of the upper Midwest included performing recitals and giving master classes at several universities, schools and churches in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Arndt’s greatest interest and dedication in music is to teaching trumpet as well as introducing audiences to contemporary classical music. His commitment to furthering new music and his participation in brass chamber ensembles has led to the creation of the Evolution Ensemble, an ensemble which integrates new music, creative entertainment and multimedia applications to engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The ensemble is dedicated to bringing exciting, avant-garde and accessible repertoire to a broader audience.

Sandra Arndt is an adjunct professor of Music at MTSU. A new addition to the Middle Tennessee State University piano and accompanying faculty, Sandra Arndt enjoys a diverse career as a piano collaborative artist, teacher and soloist. She has also joined the Murfreesboro Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra as pianist for the 2002-03 season. Arndt frequently works with musicians throughout the United States for recitals, competitions and other performances. An avid supporter of contemporary music, Arndt frequently works with chamber and wind ensembles throughout the country. She has also joined her husband, Michael, in the development of the Evolution Ensemble as pianist and manager. From 1998 to 2001, Arndt was the pianist with the National Repertory Orchestra and was featured on frequent occasions as soloist, performing concertos by Shostakovich, Bach and Ravel. Currently, she is also a finalist for the New World Symphony.

In 1999, Arndt performed as company pianist with the Milwaukee Ballet Company. In addition to her performing schedule, she has maintained an active piano studio and has worked as accompanist and vocal coach at numerous high schools. Her baccalaureate collegiate studies were with Ruth-Anne Rich at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and graduate studies followed at the University of Minnesota with Lydia Artymiw.

The Recitals in the Rotunda series continues Nov. 4 with award-winning dulcimer player Larry Conger then kicks off the holiday season Nov. 18 with a Christmas program featuring the Nashville Chamber Singers.
