Riders in the Sky bringing ‘cowboy way’ back to TRC
Release Date: 7/21/2004. Expired: 8/12/2004
In what has become one of the more popular traditions in the five-year history of The Renaissance Center, Riders in the Sky returns for another exciting concert Aug. 12 in the Performance Hall.
Tickets for the 7 p.m. show are $18.
America’s favorite cowboy music group, Riders in the Sky was featured at The Renaissance Center’s grand opening in 1999 and has returned for sold-out shows each fall since. The Aug. 12 concert marks the group’s sixth appearance at the center.
Since 1977, Riders in the Sky has faithfully tended a musical tradition kindled by singing cowboy legends such as the Sons of the Pioneers. Throughout their collaborative career, they have branded the genre with their own mark, crafted from a well-balanced mix of both classic and original western songs, smooth harmony, hot licks and slapstick comedy.
For more than two decades, through more than 4,000 shows, 200 national TV appearances, 200 public radio shows, three television series, two Grammy awards and dozens of albums, a group that began with a commitment to carry on an American musical tradition has itself become a national treasure.
The Riders’ show centers around the expert musicianship of Ranger Doug (Idol of American Youth), Woody Paul (King of the Cowboy Fiddlers), Too Slim (Insert Title of Your Choice) and Joey (the CowPolka King). The foursome combines refreshing acoustical music and a wide musical repertoire with outrageous comedy, delivering entertainment guaranteed to delight listeners, regardless of age or musical preference.
In 1999, Riders in the Sky brought the singing cowboy back to the big screen in a new way as they provided music for Walt Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 2 with their rendition of Woody’s Roundup. They recorded a companion album for the movie, which landed a Grammy award for Best Musical Album for Children in 2001. The group won the category again in 2003 for their Walt Disney Records release Monsters Inc. - Scream Factory Favorites.
After 27 years and more than 2.5 million miles on the road, Riders in the Sky is going stronger than ever and its return to The Renaissance Center is sure to sell out quickly.
