The Renaissance Center will present its first live concert inside the four-story CyberSphere Saturday night.
The show combines the live electronic music of the group SPACECRAFT with the full range of digital video and laser effects of the domed theater, which is home to planetarium and music laser shows every weekend.
The SPACECRAFT concert will be at 6 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under and senior citizens.
“This promises to be a one-of-a-kind experience,” said CyberSphere Director Kevin Scott. “This is the first time we have teamed a live music performance with all the power of the CyberSphere. The show will include video images, three-dimensional images from our Digistar II projector and the brilliant images from our Omniscan laser projector.
“During spring break, we closed the CyberSphere for maintenance on our projectors. With a little cleaning and adjustment we were able to increase the brightness and intensity of our laser by almost 20%,” Scott said.
SPACECRAFT is comprised of Nashvilles Tony Gerber and Lexingtons John Rose and Diane Timmons. The group performs ambient electronic music concerts, commonly referred to as “space music.”
The group has performed on NPRs “Echoes” with John Diliberto for the past two years and their current Lektronic Soundscapes release, “Earthtime Tapestry,” was voted Electronic Album of the Year for 1999 by “New Age Magazine.” Their second album, “Hummel,” received a critics choice review in “Billboard” magazine.
SPACECRAFTs newest album, “American Symphony,” is slated for release this month from the Space for Music Collective label at spaceformusic.com.
SPACECRAFT performed a memorable concert at the Parthenon last November and is now launching a tour that includes two planetarium shows for which the group has become known around the country. Joining SPACECRAFT is digital artist Dave Turner, who has worked with the group to create a computer animated film, “Kaleida Dreams,” which will be used as part of the show.
After a concert on the campus of Peabody College at Vanderbilt Friday, SPACECRAFT brings its tour to Dickson to perform in the CyberSphere at The Renaissance Center, 855 Hwy. 46 South, for the first of their two planetarium shows on the tour. The following week, SPACECRAFT will perform in the Golden Pond Planetarium at Land Between the Lakes and then May 20 at UnityFest 2000 at The Farm in Summertown.
