Release Date: 4/28/2004. Expired: 5/25/2004
The Renaissance Center’s music ensembles and honors students will be performing their spring concerts and recitals in May.
A two-week period of May 13-25 features performances by the center’s honors music students, children’s choirs, community chorus, chamber choir, concert band and jazz band.
Musical May begins May 13 with The Renaissance Center Student Honors Recital at 7 p.m. in the Performance Hall. Admission is free.
The recital will feature the musical skills of the center’s most advanced students. The students must audition for the recital.
“May is the conclusion of our spring semester and this recital will give our students an opportunity to perform for a live audience and show off how much they have advanced,” said Elaine Sherrill, senior director of Music at The Renaissance Center. “We offer instruction in everything from voice, harp, guitar and strings to piano, percussion and brass, among other instruments.”
Jenny Nolan Diamond presents her Training Choir and Children’s Choir in their spring concert at 7 p.m. May 18. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children under 13.
The Training Choir consists of children in first and second grades. The choir rehearses weekly during the school year and focuses on teaching students the fundamentals of music reading and vocal technique.
The Children’s Choir is open to students in third-sixth grades. Students audition for membership in this treble choir each fall.
Diamond also directs the Community Chorus and Chamber Choir, which will present their spring concert at 7 p.m. May 20. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children under 13.
The Community Chorus is an opportunity for amateur or experienced adult singers to participate in a well-trained vocal ensemble. Members rehearse weekly and must audition each fall.
The Chamber Choir is a small ensemble created to perform more difficult choral pieces and also requires an audition each fall.
The semester concludes May 25 with the spring concert of The Renaissance Center Community Concert Band and Jazz Band. Tickets for the 7 p.m. show are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children under 13.
Both are free-participation ensembles directed by Darin Cochran. They also rehearse weekly throughout the year and perform at least two concerts.
“All of our community ensembles consist of dedicated musicians, no matter what age, who enjoy practicing and playing together under wonderful directors,” Sherrill said. “Their concerts are always entertaining because of the enthusiasm the group members have and share for music.”
