Trevecca Symphony presents Know Your Baroque ABCs at The Renaissance Center
Release Date: 12/22/2003. Expired: 1/23/2004
The Trevecca Nazarene University Symphony Orchestra presents an all-Baroque concert entitled Know Your Baroque ABCs in the Performance Hall of The Renaissance Center in Dickson on Friday, Jan. 23.
Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children under 13.
Directed by Timothy H. Cierpke, the TNU Symphony Orchestra is continuing its Going Baroque series with this year’s edition featuring the works of Albinoni, Boyce, J.S. Bach and Corelli.
The Trevecca Symphony Orchestra is part professional, part amateur, part student and all volunteer.
“The TSO presents an excellent opportunity for students to learn to perform great music alongside matured musicians who have devoted years to perfecting their musical ability,” said Cierpke. “Resident orchestras of this magnitude usually do not exist on campuses the size of Trevecca and student players often are denied the ensemble experience they so badly need.”
Cierpke joined Trevecca as professor of Music in 1988 and founded the TSO. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Point Loma College in 1971, his Master’s of Music from Samford University in 1979 and a DMA from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1987.
The Symphony Orchestra is one of several music ensembles offered at Trevecca, along with the Wind Ensemble, Treble Tones (a women’s choir), Covenant Choir, Pep Band, Choral Union, Jazz Band, Madrigalians and Trevecca Civic Chorale.
“Last year the Trevecca Symphony Orchestra planned to present a wonderful Baroque concert featuring the music of Handel. Unfortunately, inclement weather prevented them from making the trip to Dickson,” said Elaine Sherrill, senior director of Music at The Renaissance Center. “We are excited to get another chance to present the Going Baroque series at the center with this year’s performance.”
Know Your Baroque ABCs will include Sonata a cinque in g moll by Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751) of Venice, Italy; Symphony V by English composer William Boyce; Concerto VIII by Italian Archangelo Corelli; and Orchestral Suite No. 1 by Johann Sebastian Bach.
