Trombonist Smith kicks off rotunda recitals series Monday (Aug. 23)

The Renaissance Center’s 2004-05 Recitals in the Rotunda series kicks off Monday, Aug. 23, with trombonist Susan K. Smith, accompanied by Deanna Shipley on piano.

The Recitals in the Rotunda series presents free performances at 7 p.m. on selected Monday night featuring professional musicians, faculty and accomplished students from area universities.

A Murfreesboro native who grew up in Clearwater, Fla., Smith is currently the second trombonist with the Nashville Symphony and a trombone instructor at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville.

She earned a BME from the University of Kansas and a Master of Music degree from the University of North Texas. She has served as an instructor of trombone at McNeese State University, Notre Dame, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the University of North Texas as a teaching fellow and the Julliard Pre-College for one summer.

In addition to freelance work in New York City and Chicago, Smith also has performed with Baltimore Symphony, Florida Orchestra, Grant Park Symphony, Springfield Symphony, South Bend Symphony, Illinois Philharmonic, Naples Philharmonic, Chicago Sinfonietta, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Lake Charles Symphony and American Wind Symphony.

Her travels with the various ensembles has provided Smith with the opportunity to play in England, Germany, Austria, China, Japan, Italy, Russia and the Canary Islands.

Smith is a 1982 winner of the International Trombone Association’s Frank Smith Award for solo scholarship competition, served on the ITA faculty as soloist and clinician, and was a member of the ITF college teachers Trombone Choir.

She has studied trombone under Otto Blankle, Richard Cryder, Stephen Anderson, Leon Brown and Per Brevig.

Following Smith’s performance on Monday, the Recitals in the Rotunda series presents:

  • Sept. 13 - Songs and Dances of the Renaissance featuring tenor Thomas King and pianist Dr. Vickie King performing on a Couchet virginal harpsichord dating from 1650;
  • Sept. 27 - Baritone David Ford and pianist Linda Ford;
  • Oct. 11 - Pianists Nancy Slaughter and Vickie King;
  • Oct. 25 - Korean-born pianist Min-Kyo Jung performing music by Chopin, Ginastera, Bach and Scarlatti;
  • Nov. 8 - The Vanderbilt Tuba Ensemble;
  • Nov. 29 - Nashville Chamber Singers and director Angela Tipps return with their Christmas program, and;
  • Dec. 13 - The Christmas HarpFest.
