Christmas theme of Kids College and Super Saturday at Renaissance Center

The Renaissance Center marks Christmas with a special Kids College and Super Saturday on Dec. 14.

The 4th annual Children’s Christmas Workshop will provide the fun for Kids College. Two sessions will be held 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. with tuition of $10 (lunch is not included) and a limit of 75 children to each session. Students will participate in three hands-on art activities creating gifts and decorations as well as enjoying hot chocolate and cookies. Advance registration is required.

The Super Saturday Christmas Celebration offers a chance to see the center decorated for the season as well as a special exhibit in the Visual Arts Gallery featuring trees decorated by Dickson County school children. The celebration also includes children’s choirs performing carols in the rotunda, Christmas karaoke, musical performances and a visit from Santa Claus who will pose for pictures at the center’s 25-foot Christmas tree.

The day will also include the first annual student pottery sale 10 a.m.-4 p.m. A variety of styles of pottery, from hand- and wheel-thrown to raku, will be offered for sale by students. The pottery will be on display in the pottery studio, E005.

Christmas Karaoke offers the opportunity to record your own CD for just $10 in The Renaissance Center’s fully digital recording studio. Choose from over 150 popular song titles or a well-known holiday song. Christmas Karaoke will be open 2-5 p.m.

The center’s rotunda will be filled with music throughout the day.

The Fairlambs will perform at 2 p.m. followed by the students from Lora Brown’s strings classes at 3 p.m.

The McEwen Elementary School Choir will perform seasonal favorites in the rotunda 3:30-4 p.m. with the Centennial and Charlotte elementary school choirs performing 4-4:30 p.m. Parker Ramsay, an accomplished piano student who was featured at the center’s 3rd anniversary celebration, will perform in the rotunda 4:30-5 p.m. Carol McClure’s harp students will perform 5-5:30 p.m.

Santa Claus will visit the celebration and pose for pictures 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 3:30-4:30 p.m. Pictures with the jolly old elf in front of the center’s 25-foot Christmas tree will be $2 apiece.

A reception for the new art gallery exhibit will be 2-5 p.m. with refreshments outside the Visual Arts Gallery. The Little Masters Exhibit features more than 6,000 ornaments made by Dickson County students on themed trees.

The CyberSphere Digital Theatre also has special holiday shows for the season.

At 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. the planetarium show Season of Light details the origins of some of the Christmas season’s traditions. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children under 13.

The 3 p.m. show is Laser Holidays, featuring some of the season’s most popular songs accompanied by spectacular laser and video effects. Admission is $6 for all seats.

The new show Christmas Laser Fantasy is at 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. It features seasonal music from Mannheim Steamroller with the full range of laser and special effects as well as 14,000 watts of digital surround sound in the CyberSphere. Admission is $6 for all seats.

The celebration concludes with a performance of the Renaissance Players’ production of A Christmas Story at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for children under 13. The play is a stage version of the popular movie about Ralphie Parker and his quest for a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas.
