Registration for Spring 2001 classes at The Renaissance Center kicks off Jan. 6 with a Super Saturday celebration full of free demonstrations and performances.
Super Saturday is a new family activity day to be held once a month at the education and arts center at 855 Highway 46 South in Dickson. The center held similar days last year to mark International Astronomy Day, its first anniversary and Halloween.
“Last years events drew tremendous crowds and gave many people their first exposure to The Renaissance Center,” said Doug Jackson, executive director. “With our new Super Saturdays, people will be able to check into classes they might want to take, see previews of some of our performances and enjoy the talents of the staff of The Renaissance Center.”
Super Saturday on Jan. 6 kicks off a two-week registration period for the Spring 2001 semester classes, which begin the week of Jan. 22. Registration tables will be set up in the rotunda 1-8 p.m.
Super Saturday also includes a full schedule of free and ticketed events.
There will be hourly demonstrations of various music classes:
- 1 p.m. - Kindermusik/Adventures in Music and MIDI demonstrations;
- 2 p.m. - Guitar and MIDI technology demonstrations;
- 3 p.m. - Percussion and piano demonstrations;
- 4 p.m. - Suzuki strings and MIDI technology demonstrations;
- 5 p.m. - Question and answer session on private and group music lesions;
- 6 p.m. - A performance by the centers music faculty.
There also will be hourly demonstrations of various classes by the Visual Arts Department:
- 1 p.m. - Oil painting and stained glass demonstrations;
- 2 p.m. - Photography and wheel-thrown pottery demonstrations and a Visual Arts information session;
- 3 p.m. - Childrens painting and mosaics demonstrations;
- 4 p.m. - Sculpting and hand-built pottery demonstrations and a Visual Arts information session;
- 5 p.m. - Watercolors and stained glass demonstrations;
- 6 p.m. - Childrens mixed media demonstration.
The centers Animation Department will hold several demonstrations:
- 1 p.m. - Character animation;
- 2 p.m. - Special effects demonstration and a curriculum discussion;
- 3 p.m. - Character animation;
- 4 p.m. - Special effects demonstration and a curriculum discussion;
- 5 p.m. - Character animation;
- 6 p.m. - Special effects demonstration and a curriculum discussion.
Throughout the day, the centers computer department and Learning Lab will present various software demonstrations and curriculum discussions.
The CyberSphere will present its usual schedule of exciting programs:
- 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. - The SkyWatchers ($5 adults, $3 children under 13);
- 3 p.m. - Laser Mania ($6 all seats);
- 8 p.m. - Hypnotica ($6 all seats);
- 9 p.m. - Dark Side of the Moon ($6 all seats).
In addition, the CyberSphere will turn into a four-story, domed movie theater with a free showing of a science fiction movie at 4 p.m.
The centers Multimedia Department will present a live taping of “Dickson County Dinner Bell,” the popular weekly cooking program hosted by Ralph Easley. The show will be broadcast live on the local access channel (InterMedia 19) at 1:30 p.m. from the centers television studio with a live audience.

Future Super Saturday celebrations will include “Its a Jungle Out There” on Feb. 17 featuring a performance of “The Jungle Book;” “A St. Patricks Day Celebration” on March 17, “International Astronomy Day” on April 28 featuring a performance of “Swiss Family Robinson,” and “Student Appreciation Day” on May 19 featuring a performance of “A Midsummer Nights Dream.”
