The Renaissance Center sums up summer for seniors

The Renaissance Center is the place to be this summer for those ages 55 and older who want to learn, play and meet new friends as a series of programs and activities has been specially designed for the young-at-heart.

Renaissance Senior Days are free of charge and Senior Lunch Theatre is offered at a reduced rate.

Each month, certain days are designated as Renaissance Senior Days. Senior citizens all across the mid-state area are invited to participate in the entertaining and educational experiences at The Renaissance Center.

On May 30 seniors can come and learn the basics of folk dancing from 10 a.m. to noon, and on June 3 The Renaissance Center’s Piano Director Harvey Earls presents a program of gospel music in The Earl-y Gospel Hour 10-11 a.m.

June 17 includes a gallery talk on the work of contemporary African American folk artist Sammie Nicely 10-11 a.m.; the CyberSphere show Journey to Infinity, which provides a fantastic tour of the Solar System and some of the most wondrous sites in the universe, at 10 a.m.; and an exhilarating and inspiring science program in the Faraday Science Theatre from 11 a.m. to noon. This program recreates some of the world’s greatest scientific discoveries.

Seniors can learn the basics of computers on June 24 from 10 a.m. to noon, and on July 1 the music faculty at The Renaissance Center presents a sing-along program with old favorites from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

July 17 learn the basics of watercolor painting from 12:30-3:30 p.m., and on July 18 become a surfing senior as beginners jump on the Internet to discover the World Wide Web with a 10 a.m. workshop.

Finally, on July 29 from 10-11 a.m. the CyberSphere presents Greatest Wonders of the Universe, which not only demonstrates how far exploration has gone beyond the bounds of planet Earth, but also what lies in the outer reaches of space.

Also on July 29, the works of twin brothers Nat and Jud Epting will be on display in the Visual Arts Gallery. Seniors will tour the gallery to view and discuss the creations of both of these emerging illustrators from 11 a.m. to noon.

As an added feature, The Renaissance Center also offers Senior Lunch Theatre, where guests can see the same wonderful theatrical productions during the day as presented each Friday evening in the Gaslight Dinner Theatre, but for a reduced price of $15.

On June 10, Senior Lunch Theatre presents All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten, based on the book by best-selling author Robert Fulghum. The production is an uplifting reminder of what individuals already know, but tend to forget in their hectic, complex lives. Tickets are $15 and go on sale May 10.

On July 9 come and dine in the intimate atmosphere of the Gaslight Dinner Theatre as Chicken a la Mozart brings the lilting sounds of strolling strings players. The dinner and music entertainment is only $10.
