Selby’s Objective Evidence photographs go beyond traditional pictures

Release Date: 5/11/2007. Expired: 6/30/2007

Photographs with something extra take on a whole new dimension in Objective Evidence, an exhibit of works by Easton Selby on display in the East Wing Gallery of The Renaissance Center in Dickson May 15-June 30.

This photographic exhibition pushes the boundaries of the typical camera-based image. By directly working the surface of these sometimes large-scale images with wax, they begin to take on a new life outside of the photographic tradition.

Here the pieces deal with an underlying relationship to life, death and spirituality. Selby himself says much of this is unintentional, though it continues to be a theme, whether dominant or submissive within the work. Objects that appear in the images slowly become symbols for the artist, taking on new meaning as they unconsciously occur and reoccur throughout time.

Just like the subjects in front of Selby’s camera, his coated photographs take on new characteristics (such as the subtle scent of the wax) and become more physical in nature, allowing the viewer to experience the captured moment much like the artist. This duality of experience seeks to help close the gap between viewer and maker, giving access to the audience and allowing them to be part of and complete the creative and artistic process.

Selby is a graduate of Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography with a minor in Drawing. He is a graduate of Clemson University’s Master of Fine Arts Program with am emphasis in Visual Arts. He is an adjunct art instructor at Belmont University in Nashville.
