Doug Stevenson’s ceramic works functional and playful
Release Date: 6/13/2008. Expired: 7/26/2008
The playful side of Nashville ceramicist Doug Stevenson can be seen in new pieces that stray from the tradition of function-based pottery.
A sampling of Stevenson’s works will be displayed in the North Wing Display Cases at The Renaissance Center June 19-July 26. An opening reception will be 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, June 20.
A long-time artist and instructor of ceramics in the continuing education program at Watkins College of Arts and Design in Nashville, Stevenson is known largely for his work with children. He has developed a true and devout fan base from Nashville to the Dickson community as he often works with the Mud Puddle Pottery Studio in Pegram.
“Doug brings his work to The Renaissance Center for the first time in a sampling of his ceramic works spanning the range from artistic to functional,” said Armon Means, curator at the center.
While having spent much time creating more traditional ceramic forms that fall into the functional capacity, Stevenson’s newest work has taken on a more organic life. The pieces abandon the formal world of craft for function sake and delve into an exploration of the visual strategies that form more sculptural concerns in the medium.
“Maybe the work with children has inspired the more playful side of Doug’s new work, but as he seeks to introduce this newest collection he has clearly broken free of the conventions of the ceramic media,” Means said. “Though working in a fairly traditional region when it comes to his material of choice, Doug is able to seek out a new direction and construct a contemporary space for dialogue to take place about the formal and conceptual qualities of his work.”
