The Tennessee Art Education Association and The Renaissance Center in Dickson are partnering to present the first annual Middle Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition, a juried show featuring artwork created by Middle Tennessee middle and high school students.
The exhibit will be displayed in The Renaissance Center’s East Wing and North Wing Galleries Jan. 23-March 14. An opening reception and awards ceremony will be 3-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.
The exhibition is a juried show open to students in grades 6-12, attending public, private or home schools in Middle Tennessee. More than 300 artworks created by 193 Middle Tennessee students were submitted and the jurors selected 145 pieces from 120 students representing 16 schools in the region.
“This competition offers students the opportunity to display their talents and be honored for their accomplishments in a professional center for the arts environment,” said Amanda Dillingham, curator at The Renaissance Center and coordinator for the Middle Tennessee Art Exhibition for TAEA. “The student art exhibition provides an excellent competitive arena for young artists as well as an opportunity for the public to see the high quality artwork being made in various schools.”
Categories for the competition include ceramic, drawing, digital imagery, mixed media, painting, computer graphics, sculpture, traditional photography and printmaking
The awards ceremony will consist of $250,000 in scholarships and cash prizes of almost $1,000 and the opening reception will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, in the rotunda at The Renaissance Center, for the artists participating, their families, friends, school personnel and the general public.
There are cash awards totaling $950. The Best-of-Show winner receives a purchase award of $500 and the artwork is to become part of the permanent collection of The Renaissance Center. In addition, The Art Store has sponsored a gift certificate in the amount of $100 for the teacher of the student whose piece is chosen Best-of-Show.
Four-year tuition scholarships for winning juniors and seniors who are eligible to attend and who complete application requirements will be awarded in the amount of $33,000 to the Memphis College of Art, $33,900 to the Maryland Institute College of Art and full-tuition scholarships to attend pre-college summer program, $60,000 to the Savannah College of Art and Design, $8,000 to the College for Creative Studies, and $115,000 to the Watkins College of Art, Design and Film.
“The Knoxville Museum of Art and the East Tennessee Chapter of TAEA began an annual competition in 2007 to offer middle and high school students in that region the opportunity to display their talents and to be honored for their accomplishments,” said Dillingham. “We are so excited to bring this competition to the Middle Tennessee Region. The quality of the artworks received, the dedication of the teachers, and the commitment of The Renaissance Center’s staff have created a new tradition for museums and schools in our region.”
Jurors for the first annual Middle Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition were James Dodson, middle school program coordinator and state student art exhibition coordinator for TAEA, Flowerree Galetovic, TAEA president and a Knox County art teacher, and Judy Jorden, a retired art teacher from the Knox County school system.
The student art exhibition is sponsored by the Tennessee Art Education Association, The Renaissance Center, The Renaissance Center’s Theatre Family Tree, Jerry’s Artarama, The Art Store, Plaza Art Store, Watkins College of Art, Design and Film, Maryland Institute and College of Art, Memphis College of Art, Savannah College of Art and Design and the College for Creative Studies.
