North Wing Gallery to feature works by Christopher Martin
Release Date: 10/5/2006. Expired: 12/2/2006
Chris Martin is a talented and enthusiastic student of art, photography and songwriting. Some of Martin’s works will be on display in The Renaissance Center’s North Wing Gallery Oct. 25-Dec. 2. An opening reception will be 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27.
Martin’s first studies include oil with Hannah Maxwell at the Renaissance Center, illustration under Jeff Preston and Blake Long at Nossi College of Art, and value and composition of plein air painting with renowned local artist Jason Saunders.
Of particular interest to the artist is perspective in everyday situationssearching for and finding the beauty and art in the things we tend to take for granted like a warm, early morning light on an old run-down house. Martin prefers “real life and real emotions” to the posed, prepared and carefully presented exteriors he says we present for others to see. “Even when someone looks sad or worried, I’d rather capture their real feelings than a smile they put on to pretend they’re happy.”
Martin has a background in livestock agriculture and an affinity for most animals, and he enjoys making them subjects of his work. His favorite subjects are “light and life” and whether they play a large or small role, they will be apparent in most of his pieces. Still exploring himself as an artist, there is variety and variance in his work. His collection is fused together with his interest in and his passion for the exploration process.
Martin is currently enrolled at Watkins College of Art & Design where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in graphic design. He was chosen by the Nashville Advertising Federation as their 2006 scholarship winner. Martin is also a part of the print production team for The Buntin Group, Nashville’s largest advertising firm whose clients include Cracker Barrel and O’Charley’s restaurants, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee, and RBC Centura Bank.
Martin’s work will be displayed in the North Wing Gallery 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Admission to The Renaissance Center’s galleries and art receptions is free.
