Bright, bold colors explode from Foster’s watercolor paintings

Release Date: 3/17/2006. Expired: 5/27/2006

Bright, bold colors explode from the watercolor paintings in Expressions of Joy, a collection of works by Barrie Foster to be displayed in the North Wing Gallery at The Renaissance Center in Dickson April 8-May 27.

An opening reception will be 6-7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8.

Foster’s watercolors are bright and bold in a style that is uniquely her own. Her paintings do not reflect proper use of perspective; instead she celebrates the design of objects. She chooses subject matters where she can reflect the beauty of design.

Two of her favorite subjects are antique tractors and city street scenes.

Foster says she is drawn to antique tractors because of their interesting grills, wheels and colors.

In her paintings, Foster captures scenes from various places around the country. She frequently travels with her husband and takes her paints along. She especially loves the cities of Memphis and New Orleans because of their high energy levels. Foster’s Tennessee paintings contain numbers that represent important events in her life.

Foster began painting in 1997 and after moving to the Memphis area in 1998 she began studying with Frank Sher and later with Fred Rawlinson.

Her artwork has been widely shown in Memphis area art exhibits and has won numerous awards, including the Memphis/Germantown Art League’s Best of Show in 2004, a second place and an honorable mention from the 2005 Bartlett Art Association Spring Exhibition and a creativity award from the National League of American Penwomen Exhibition.

Foster has a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Virginia Tech and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and says she feels very fortunate to be able to explore her artistic side after having had a successful business career.

She lives on a small farm north of Memphis with her husband, four cats, two dogs and four tractors.

Expressions of Joy will be displayed in the North Wing Gallery April 8-May 27. The Renaissance Center’s galleries are open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and admission is free.
