Dorna McDonald May exhibit opens Friday at Renaissance Center

After being selected for two Renaissance Regional Art Exhibits, Dorna McDonald May is being featured in a solo exhibit of her work in the Visual Arts Gallery at The Renaissance Center April 18-May 31.

Middle Tennessee resident May has had one-woman shows in Tennessee, Illinois, Florida, California, Indiana and Georgia, and her paintings are included in private collections across the country.

“What interests me is the revelation of mystery that is the primal power of nature, at once both horrific and exquisite,” May said.

Jurors for the 2002 and 2003 RRAE selected May’s works to be included in those exhibits from more than 400 entries each year.

“The approach to Dorna’s art creates a unique expression of the relation between self and nature,” said Curtis Southerland, curator of the Visual Arts Gallery. “This recent body of figurative works focuses on the comforting and uplifting views of life.”

May has received both a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. in drawing and painting from the University of Georgia. She also attended Vanderbilt University, the University of Colorado and the Harris School in Arezzo, Italy.

“As an artist, it is my intention to have no intention,” May said. “I try not to be smart or clever, allowing the paintings to create themselves. Then I try not to analyze them, but to experience them. I enjoy being surprised and awed by what is revealed.”

An opening reception for May’s exhibit will be 6-9 p.m. April 18 and is free to the public. The Visual Arts Gallery is open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and admission is free.
