Outside the Box

Release Date: 4/6/2000. Expired: 5/30/2000

The Clarksville-Montgomery County Museum is proud to present an innovative program of artistic exploration for a broader audience. “Outside the Box” has been created through a partnership between the Museum, Austin Peay State University. The Tennessee School for the Blind, and the Clarksville/Montgomery County Schools. Funding for this exhibit is made possible through a Goals 2000 grant, a U.S. Department of Education program. The TN. DEPT. of Education through Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools awarded this grant to Austin Peay State University.

The exhibit, which was conceived, designed and produced by professional artists and students from over 50 classrooms statewide, debuts on April 6, 2000 at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Museum.

“Outside the Box” is the culmination of a yearlong initiative, created by Dr. Larry Lowrance of APSU, with Rebecca Exley and Janelle Strandberg Aieta of the CMCM. It focuses on art education and disability awareness. The challenge for the artists and students is to create works that can be appreciated by people with visual impairments. Goals 2000 funding provided each artist and classroom with art supplies and training to enable them to think “outside the box.” Although the pieces will be visually attractive, they are primarily designed to stimulate sense other than visual.

After the exhibit spends its first month at the CMCM, it will travel to at least seven other sites throughout the state. Some of the venues include The Kennedy Center at Vanderbilt; The Renaissance Center, Dickson; and The Creative Discovery Museum in Chattanooga.
