6th Regional Exhibit features 33 pieces selected by juror

Release Date: 10/5/2004. Expired: 11/13/2004

Works by 33 artists from six different states have been selected for display in the 6th annual Renaissance Regional Art Exhibit in the Visual Arts Gallery at The Renaissance Center in Dickson.

More than 65 artists in 12 southeastern states submitted pieces for the annual juried show. Bob Kucher, deputy director of the Tennessee Arts Commission, reviewed the entries and selected 33 pieces to be displayed for the exhibit in the gallery.

The 6th annual Renaissance Regional Art Exhibit continues in the Visual Arts Gallery through Nov. 13.

“As in previous years, this regional exhibit includes a variety of pieces and styles,” said Curtis Southerland, curator of the Visual Arts Gallery. “The selected pieces range from sculpture to photography and paintings in many mediums, including acrylic, watercolor, oil, graphite, pastel and more.”

While the majority of pieces selected - 24 - are from artists in Tennessee, states represented also include Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi and Missouri. Tennessee artists range from Knoxville and Chattanooga to Nashville and Cookeville.

Kucher selected four pieces for awards in the show.

Judge’s Choice Awards went to: David Maxwell of Miramar, Fla., for his opaque watercolor entitled Not Quite Plumb; Elaine Faggart of Chattanooga for her bronze sculpture entitled Antonio; Clint Cearley of Pleasantville, Tenn., for his graphite drawing entitled Response.

A Merit Award was presented to Carl Gombert of Maryville, Tenn., for his pastel and acrylic painting entitled Purple Elizabeth.

Several award winners from past Renaissance Regional Art Exhibits have been selected for solo exhibits in the Visual Arts Gallery at The Renaissance Center and other galleries.

Southerland said he expects the 2004 exhibit will be no different, with plans in the works to feature several of the selected artists in future shows.

“The regional exhibit not only provides exposure for the artists, but also the opportunity for our patrons to experience many styles of art,” Southerland said. “Several of these artists have been in previous regional shows here and could be bringing more of their works for solo exhibits.”
