Release Date: 2/8/2001. Expired: 3/31/2001

Coming to The Renaissance Center’s Visual Arts Gallery is Mike Freeman’s Rosedan Collection, a vast collection of original Renaissance Period paintings, tapestries, artifacts and armor. On display from March 3 – 31, 2001, the opening reception will take place Saturday, March 3, 2-5 p.m. Years have been spent traveling abroad in search of the artifacts and rare armor that make up this exquisite collection.

The Rosedan Collection started over thirty years ago when Rose and Dan Phillips, both avid history devotees, began their search for period artifacts. They traveled to Europe every year searching for art and antiquities, shipping their newfound treasures back to the United States. In 1973, they moved to England and continued their quest.

Today, it is considered one of the finest private collections of period antiquities. Included in the collection are examples of period furniture, ancient stained glass, woodcarvings, tapestry, forged iron work, paintings and arms and armor.

Gallery Curator, Curtis Southerland said, “Seeing and actually being able to hold these artifacts is breathtaking. Items over five centuries old make up a majority of this exhibit. One artifact dates back to early first century. Being able to see items from the time of Christ is an awesome experience. We are very grateful to Freeman and this once in a lifetime experience he is offering to this community.”

In 1977, the Phillips’ met Mike Freeman, another lover of Renaissance Era art and architecture. Just a year earlier, Freeman purchased 40 acres in Triune, TN as the location for his dream home; a medieval castle, complete with a Great Hall and detailed with such flourishes as a hooded fireplace. Rose and Dan had planned to move to the castle one day and donate their collection to the people of Tennessee. Unfortunately, Rose passed away before this happened so Dan moved the collection to Tennessee himself and set it up as a memorial to his wife, calling it the “Rosedan Collection.”

The collection is now housed in Freeman’s home; a reproduction of a 12th century medieval castle, Castle Gwynn. This celebrated collection, which has graced book covers, first day stamp covers, television advertisements and photographers’ art, is now awaiting the building of a “Baron’s Hall” to house it in its entirety.

“Gallery talks by Mike Freeman and medieval battle demonstrations are scheduled to take place during the opening reception,” adds Southerland. “Talks and demonstrations will also occur throughout the month of March. This exhibit is sure to appeal to all ages.”

A collection not to be missed, see the Freeman/Rosedan Collection on display in the Visual Arts Gallery of The Renaissance Center March 3-31. The opening reception is Saturday, March 3, 2-5 p.m. and is free and open to everyone. The center is located at 855 Hwy. 46 S., Dickson.
