Selected members of the Tennessee Art League will display their works in the East Wing Gallery of The Renaissance Center in Dickson July 21-Aug. 26.

A reception for the exhibit will be 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, in conjunction with the center’s Arts Fusion II celebration of the arts. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

A group of artists founded the Tennessee Art League in 1954 to provide a place for artists to exhibit their art and for the public to have free access to view the works. Over its first 50 years, TAL has come from finding gallery space between Third and Fourth Avenues in Nashville (known as Art Alley) to repairing the pediments of the Parthenon. After repairing the building, artists began exhibiting in 1955, including local artists who would later become nationally known.

The primary mission of the TAL is to assist local visual artists by providing quality gallery space, workshops and educational programs. The league also endeavors to enrich the community by providing professional artist materials to schools, teaching art in community centers, senior centers, homeless shelters and to at-risk children.

The TAL started the Central South Art Exhibition in 1965 and it has become one of the top exhibits in Tennessee for more than 40 years.

The league has recently relocated to new space at 808 Broadway, near the Frist Center for the Arts, which will provide more gallery space, classroom and workshop space.
