The Tennessee Watercolor Society was formed in 1971 for the purpose of elevating the stature of watercolor and to educate the public to the significance of watercolor as an important, creative, permanent painting medium. The organization proposes to further the interest of painters in all water media by its programs, competitive exhibits and workshops, encourage the study of water media by art students and others engaged in the medium, as well as supporting all the visual arts.

It is a statewide organization whose membership of more than 200 includes artists who reside in the state of Tennessee. The TnWS sponsors workshops, membership shows and biennial juried exhibitions. Exhibitions of the TnWS are strong and well respected competitions, with an abundant award structure that is enhanced each exhibition with new patrons.

The society held its first exhibition in 1972 at Chattanooga’s Hunter Museum with Ohio artist and author Robert Laessig as juror.

The biennial exhibits are rotated across the state with Nashville serving as host in 2000, Chattanooga in 2002, Jackson in 2004 and the 30th Tennessee Watercolor Society exhibition at the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center in Clarksville May 18-July 7.

While remaining true to its mission of promoting an appreciation of watercolor and water media, the TnWS strives to bring exciting shows having versatility and innovation in both traditional and cutting-edge paintings in water media.

The society is open to artists and patrons, 18 and older, throughout the state of Tennessee. For more information on the Tennessee Watercolor Society, visit www.tnws.org.
