Learn to Play Violin in One Day
Release Date: 3/29/2002. Expired: 4/6/2002
For those who yearn to play the violin but believe it’s just too difficult, The Renaissance Center has the perfect workshop.
The Learn to Play Violin in One Day workshop will teach students the basics of how to hold the violin and play a few simple tunes. From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 6, students will learn to play such tunes as Mary Had a Little Lamb, Hot Cross Buns, a French folk song, a fiddle tune and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.
“Fiddling around has never been so much fun,” said Lora Brown, who, along with Charles Li, will teach the one-day workshop. “Twinkle isn’t just for children anymore.”
Li said students will learn all the basics, which, he noted, are simple.
“You only have two things to think about really: the bow and the fingers,” Li said. “We’ll set up the basic posture and explain why the violin is held the way it is, and why the bow is held the way it is. We’ll approach music as a language and teach it that way. We’ll master the bow hold, basic rhythms and good tone production.
“The second thing is the fingers,” Li said.
“We’ll start with only three of them, hitting the same three spots,” he said. “We’ll show the easiest and most efficient way to move the fingers and how to play in tune.”
Emphasis will be placed on the care of the instrument as well.
“I’m looking forward to teaching it,” Li said. “One of my goals is to show people how simple the violin is. It’s not easy, but simple. If one breaks it down right, anyone can learn to play the violin. The hardest part is disciplining oneself to practice every day so each step becomes easy. If one masters the bow and masters the fingers, the rest is just learning new patterns of notes to play whatever one wants.”
The cost for the workshop is $15.
