Based loosely on Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist, the musical has become a theatre classic that earned three Tony Awards and five Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Oliver! is full of colorful characters and some of the most memorable music in Broadway history, including songs like Food, Glorious Food, Where Is Love, Consider Yourself, As Long As He Needs Me and more.
With music, lyrics and book written by Lionel Bart, Oliver! debuted in London in 1960 and ran for more than 2,600 performances. It came to Broadway for more than 800 shows beginning in 1963 and earned 10 Tony Award nominations, winning three.
A 1968 movie version received 12 Academy Award nominations, winning five including Best Picture. It was revived on Broadway in 1984 with Patti Lupone in a featured role and in London in 1994. Another revival is scheduled to open in December in the West End with Rowan Atkinson (best known as Mr. Bean) in the role of Fagin, the leader of a band of pickpockets.
Oliver! is known for launching the careers of several future stars. A young David Jones played the Artful Dodger in a London production then brought the role to Broadway before going on to become Davy Jones of The Monkees. Phil Collins, later lead singer for Genesis as well as a successful solo career, also performed as the Artful Dodger in a London production.
“Oliver! is one of the most loved musicals of all time and we are excited to bring it to the stage of The Renaissance Center,” said Amy Scott, assistant artistic director for the center and director of the show. “It is a wonderful story featuring a large cast, including opportunities for many children to get involved in the theatre.”
