MET series presents magical world of Seussical at Renaissance Center
Release Date: 9/10/2008. Expired: 11/24/2008
Many of Dr. Seuss’ favorite characters come to life in a story of persistence, friendship and loyalty as the Mind Enriching Theatre series at The Renaissance Center presents Seussical this fall.
Seussical will be available for school and group field trips Tuesday-Friday, Sept. 30-Dec. 18. There will be a special public performance at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. Tickets are $10.
From the Cat in the Hat and Horton the elephant to the Grinch and all the Whos of Whoville, Seussical brings to life the fanciful characters that have been favorites for generations in a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza.
"After all these years being stuck on a page, did you ever imagine you'd see me onstage? Now I'm here, there is no telling what may ensue! No, there is no telling, but I'll give you a clue..." So says the mischievous Cat in the Hat at the onset of Seussical.
Dr. Seuss’ classic, colorful tales are seamlessly brought together by JoJo, a young boy and “thinker of strange and wonderful thinks!” As each story unfolds you will marvel at how relevant and profound Seuss' subtle themes are, making this musical one that appeals to all ages.
The score emerges as a Seussian gumbo of musical styles, ranging from Latin to pop, swing to gospel, and R&B to funk.
Following a six-month run on Broadway 2000-01, including guest appearances by Rosie O’Donnell, Cathy Rigby and Aaron Carter, Seussical launched two national tours and in 2004 was the most performed production by high school theatres in the United States. Its popularity has continued and in 2007 it was the second-most performed show by schools.
“The show incorporates not only Dr. Seuss’ familiar characters, but also the themes that are so central to many of his stories,” said Amy Scott, assistant artistic director at the center and director for the show. “Perhaps Horton sums it up best when he sings, ‘I meant what I said and I said what I meant, an elephant's faithful one hundred percent.’”
