Release your inner Disney character in scholarship fundraiser show

Release Date: 10/9/2008. Expired: 10/31/2008

Have you always wanted to sing Hakuna Mutata but thought you just weren’t right to play a warthog? Are you a guy who is secretly burning to belt out A Whole New World or a girl with the desire to let your inner bear out with The Bare Necessities? Want to show the world that gray hair can’t stop you from showing the youngsters how to Bop to the Top?

Your chance is coming Friday, Oct. 31, at The Renaissance Center in Dickson.

With the rousing success of last spring’s Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda: A Night of Musical Theatre, the Renaissance Players are bringing the fund-raising musical revue back with a twist: Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda II: Disney Takes the Stage.

All those Disney songs that you were the wrong age, wrong sex or even the wrong species to sing are fair game in a night of performances to raise money for the Mel Romine Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually by the Renaissance Players to a graduating senior planning to pursue an education in a theatre-related field.

Tickets for the 7 p.m. show in the Performance Hall of The Renaissance Center are $10.

Any Renaissance Players member or past or present member of the Renaissance Repertory Theatre Company is invited to take the stage in a night of Disney music.

But there is one catch.

“In the spirit of Halloween, all the performers must sing in costume as their chosen Disney characters,” said Amy Scott, assistant artistic director at The Renaissance Center. “If you’re a guy singing a song from The Little Mermaid, you can dress up as Ariel. If you’re middle-aged and singing something from High School Musical, you can be a cheerleader. What better way to have some fun, hear some terrific singers and enjoy a bunch of treats and even some tricks?”

And the treats won’t just be limited to the performers on stage.

“This will be a fun and entertaining alternative to traditional trick or treating that the entire family can come out to enjoy and even sing along,” Scott said. “For everyone who comes to the show in their Halloween costume, we’ll have a special treat bag in addition to the great show.”

There is a limited number of performance opportunities and the deadline to sign up to perform in Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda II: Disney Takes the Stage is Oct. 10. Anyone interested in performing should contact Scott at (615) 740-5551 or amy.scott@rcenter.org.

The Mel Romine Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Mel Romine, a member of the Renaissance Players who performed in several productions at the center before his death in 2004.

“Mel was one of our early stars in our community theatre program,” Scott said. “Even at retirement age, he found something new to enjoy when he got involved in theatre. Mel brought a unique style to every role, whether he was a tree in The Wizard of Oz, playing Sitting Bull in Annie Get Your Gun, wearing a Viking helmet in The Sound of Music or counting his trips around Rome in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. There was no show or role that Mel didn’t enjoy and bring a little extra life to. I’m sure if he was still with us, he would sign up to sing something outrageous for Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda.”

Since its creation following Romine’s death, the Mel Romine Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Sarah Arnold of Nashville, Hannah Durgin of Bon Aqua, Caitlin Teal Little of Clarksville and Chandler Nichols of Ashland City.
