The Boys Next Door Come to Dinner Theatre
Release Date: 8/6/2001. Expired: 11/9/2001
From good-natured Norman to hyperactive Arnold, from Lucien who has the mind of a 5-year-old to Barry, the brilliant schizophrenic, audiences will laugh at, appreciate and be touched by The Boys Next Door, Tom Griffin’s play addressing the thorny issue of mainstreaming the mentally challenged in neighborhood halfway houses.
“This play is about the daily lives of four wonderful men who live together under the loose supervision of an underpaid, overworked social worker who cares for them deeply,” said Kim Leavitt, director of drama education for the center. “It’s very funny but also very revealing as it makes us question our definition of what ‘normal’ really means.”
Although the behavior and antics of the four men are often hilarious, the play reveals an overall message that people who consider themselves “normal” are often the most handicapped.
