Release Date: 8/15/2003. Expired: 9/27/2003
For more than 50 years, the world has laughed, sighed and identified with Charlie Brown and his Peanuts friends through comics, television and stage. The characters created by the late Charles M. Schulz will come to life in the delightful Broadway musical You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown in the Gaslight Dinner Theatre at The Renaissance Center in Dickson.
The 2003-04 dinner theatre season kicks off with a musical look at a day in the life of lovable blockhead Charlie Brown, his imaginative beagle Snoopy, sister Sally and friends Linus, Schroeder and crabby Lucy.
You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown runs Friday and Saturday evenings Sept. 5-27. A buffet dinner is served beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the show to follow in the intimate Gaslight Dinner Theatre. Tickets are $27 per person and include dinner, drink, dessert and the show.
The buffet for the production includes sugar cured ham with apricot-mustard glaze, marinated honey-lime chicken breast, baked sweet potatoes with raisins and pecans, broccoli casserole, green beans, potato and red onion roast, Italian- and ranch-marinated vegetables, dinner rolls, waldorf surprise salad, chocolate peanut treats and turtle cake.
Senior Lunch Matinees will be presented at noon on each Friday of the run for patrons 50 and older. The Senior Lunch Matinee includes a buffet meal and show for just $17. The Senior Lunch Matinee buffet includes sugar cured ham with apricot-mustard glaze, marinated honey-lime chicken breast, baked sweet potatoes with raisins and pecans, green beans, marinated vegetables, waldorf surprise salad, dinner rolls and turtle cake.
And just for You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, the dinner theatre is offering Family Matinees at noon on Saturdays. The Family Matinee includes a lunch buffet and the show for $15 for adults, $10 for children under 13 and a Family Pack for two adults and two children for $40. The lunch buffet will include hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings, baked beans, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, chocolate peanut treats and pudding.
“Because the Peanuts comic strip is popular with adults and children alike, we thought You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is an ideal family show,” said Pacer Harp, managing director of the Gaslight Dinner Theatre. “With the Saturday matinees added to the schedule, we want to make a fun family event available in the theatre.”
You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is a revised version of the original musical that returned to Broadway in 1999. Clark Gesner wrote the original play, music and lyrics, but new dialogue has been added to the revised version by Michael Mayer and new music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa.
The Gaslight Dinner Theatre’s production will be directed by Hal Partlow, managing director of the Renaissance Repertory Theatre Company, with choreography by Harp and Wendy Nash-Remick and musical direction by Elaine Sherrill, senior director of Music at The Renaissance Center.
“Charlie Brown is such a big part of life in America,” said Partlow. “This show follows the ups and downs of Charlie Brown, from Valentine’s Day to baseball season, from wild optimism to utter despair. Charlie Brown, his faithful dog Snoopy, sister Sally and friends Linus, Lucy and Schroeder present a day in the life of America’s favorite comic strip characters full of laughs, songs, dancing, baseball, heartbreak and many of the familiar antics of the Peanuts gang.”
The Peanuts comic strip debuted Oct. 2, 1950, and quickly became one of America’s favorites. Schulz retired Dec. 14, 1999, and the last original strip ran in January 2000. Schulz died a month later.
You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown originally opened off Broadway in 1967 with Gary Burghoff, later to gain fame as Radar O’Reilly in the MASH movie and television series, in the role of Charlie Brown. It moved to Broadway in 1971 and enjoyed more than 1,500 performances.
The show was revived on Broadway Feb. 5, 1999, with additional dialogue and two new songs. The new version received four Tony nominations: Best Revival of a Musical, Best Director, Best Featured Actor in a Musical and Best Featured Actress in a Musical, winning the latter two for Roger Bart as Snoopy and Kristin Chenowith as Sally. The cast recording also was nominated for a Grammy.
