New adaptation turns tables on A Christmas Carol’s ghosts at Renaissance Center
Release Date: 11/12/2005. Expired: 12/10/2005
With the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future suffering from “job burnout,” it’s up to the descendants of Ebenezer Scrooge and Jacob Marley to revive the true Christmas spirit in a new production from The Renaissance Center’s Mind Enriching Theatre (MET) series.
Written by Tina Smith Romine of Dickson, A Christmas Carol Revisited turns the tables on the Charles Dickens classic story A Christmas Carol, as it’s now the ghosts who need an “attitude adjustment.”
A Christmas Carol Revisited is being presented in one public matinee performance on Saturday, Dec. 10. A lunch buffet will be served in the Gaslight Dinner Theatre at noon with the play presented at 1 p.m. in the Performance Hall. Tickets for the lunch and show are $10 while tickets for the show only are $7.
Directed by Zak Risinger, a member of the Renaissance Repertory Theatre Company, A Christmas Carol Revisited takes place in modern day when, after centuries of keeping alive the Christmas spirit, the spectral employees of Ghosts of Christmas, Inc. find their holiday cheer waning.
“Christmas just isn’t much fun anymore,” bemoans the Ghost of Christmas Future (Bret Wilson).
When the ghosts are joined by new spirit Jessica Marley (Katherine Jett), they discover that she is the great-great-great niece of Jacob Marley, the former partner of Ebenezer Scrooge who was their greatest success story. They discover that Jessica’s best friend while she was living was Emily Scrooge (Anna Hammonds), the great-great-great niece of Scrooge himself, and decide that she could benefit from their “business of attitude adjustment.”
Despite Jessica’s assurances that Emily’s Christmas cheer is quite alive, the Ghosts set out to work their magic. Only it’s Jessica and Emily that provide the attitude adjustments to the spirits through a series of different themed visits.
Ghost of Christmas Past (Matt Romine) visits in a 1950s television situation reminiscent of Leave It to Beaver, only to have Jessica and Emily help bring back his memories of Christmas cheer.
Ghost of Christmas Present (Daniel Bissell) visits in a gangster film noir from a Mickey Spillane novel complete with a musical and dance number.
Ghost of Christmas Future, who stayed up the night before watching Star Wars, appears as Darth Vader and faces off with Emily as Princess Leia and Jessica as Yoda in a light saber duel to save him from “the Dark Side of Christmas.”
In the end, the true spirit of Christmas triumphs and the ghosts are reinvigorated to set about converting the Scrooges of the world again.
“Who would have thought that a Scrooge could teach me something about Christmas cheer,” observes Christmas Past.
The MET series is presenting Romine’s A Christmas Carol Revisited for students on field trips to The Renaissance Center Nov. 29-Dec. 16. It will be presented in only one public performance in the Dec. 10 matinee. There are a limited number of lunch-and-show tickets on sale with a child-friendly buffet being offered.
