Christmas Seasonings

Christmas Seasonings II spices up Gaslight

Release Date: 11/19/2001. Expired: 12/22/2001

Christmas Seasonings was such a hit last year that it’s back again for this holiday season in the Gaslight Dinner Theatre at The Renaissance Center.

The lively and witty musical Christmas comedy opens Nov. 16 and runs Fridays at 6:30 p.m. through Dec. 21 with additional Saturday shows in December.

Produced and directed by the Theatre and Drama Department and members of the Repertory Company, the “nuttier-than-a-fruitcake” play was written and adapted by Kim Leavitt, director of Theatre Education at The Renaissance Center.

This quirky retelling of A Christmas Carol and The Gift of the Magi, with a visit to the farcical Elf University thrown in for good measure, is a recipe of music and mayhem certain to become a permanent part of local holiday flavor.

It seems Wal-Mart is looking for Christmas help and is taking applications. Those who are accepted must attend Elf University to learn how to handle the Christmas rush in Toys and Joys Land. To add more spice, a local church comes into the superstore to perform its version of A Christmas Carol and The Gift of the Magi. What happens during these presentations is hysterically funny when the elves have to step in and help out.

For example, in A Christmas Carol, the three ghosts, including the ghost of Elvis Presley, must contend with the crotchety old Ebaniah Scrudge. The Gift of the Magi turns into The Gift of the Maggies, a very “special” couple, to say the least.

Starring along with Leavitt are Pacer Harp, Hal Partlow, Jeremy Evans, Jan Dial and Robyn Smith. “The Gaslight Dinner Theatre is serving up a heaping helping of holiday warmth and Christmas cheer in a potpourri of merry music and holiday hilarity,” Harp said. “There’s a pinch of Southern spice that makes it nuttier than a fruitcake.”

The presentation also features standard tunes, traditional Christmas carols, novelty songs and spirituals “to put people into the holiday spirit,” Harp said. “It’s crazy, it’s really funny stuff. It’s a little out there.”

The menu is typical of the holiday season, with the traditional Christmas dinner, he said.

Harp said those planning to attend should make their reservations early since three of the performance dates, including opening night, are already sold out: Friday, Nov. 16; Saturday, Dec. 1; and Saturday, Dec. 8. Of course the center is closed Friday, Nov. 23 and the theatre is dark for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Tickets are $25 for dinner and the show and reservations are required. To purchase tickets or for more information call The Renaissance Center at (615)740-5600.

The Renaissance Center is located at 855 Highway 46 South in Dickson, just 35 minutes west of Nashville.
