Cast rocks with 8-Track flashback to ’70s in Gaslight Dinner Theatre

Release Date: 9/15/2004. Expired: 10/2/2004

Return to the decade of polyester, lava lamps, bean bags, shag carpeting and avocado green appliances with the magical musical journey of 8-Track: The Sounds of the 70’s in the Gaslight Dinner Theatre at The Renaissance Center in Dickson.

Relive one of the most diverse musical decades in history, as a quartet of singers travels through time in a high-energy musical revue flashback that is “not sold in stores.” It’s a salute to the music that evolved from protest songs to pop to disco that will have you dancing in your seat and striking your best John Travolta pose from Saturday Night Fever.

Presented Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 2 in the intimate Gaslight Dinner Theatre, 8-Track is a rush back in time for anyone who came of age in the baby boomer generation. Tickets are $27 per person and include a buffet meal, drink, dessert and professional theatre production. Seating begins at 6:15 p.m. with the buffet open at 6:30 p.m. Reservations can be made until noon the day of each show.

Director Pacer Harp, managing director of the Gaslight Dinner Theatre, has brought together a cast of rock-solid singers to bring to life a non-stop K-Tel commercial for the music of the decade.

Ryan Hunt of Evansville, Ind., returns for his second season with the Renaissance Repertory Theatre Company. Hunt has appeared in Gaslight Dinner Theatre productions of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, Barefoot in the Park, The Dining Room and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. He also directed and appeared in the Renaissance Players production of The Miracle Worker.

Tawny Frey of Dickson is appearing in her third consecutive dinner theatre production, after The Dining Room and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. She also has appeared in the Renaissance Players productions of Cinderella, The Miracle Worker, Grease and A Christmas Carol, and was a member of the Renaissance Repertory Theatre Company last season.

Scott Douglas is appearing in his first production in the Gaslight Dinner Theatre. A Little Rock, Ark., native, Douglas has been singing and acting since childhood. He has appeared in community theatre productions in both Little Rock and Nashville, including portraying the Lion in The Wiz, Bobby in Company and Billy in Anything Goes.

Kris McCarthy is making her first appearance in a Gaslight Dinner Theatre production. The Clarksville native has appeared in several shows at the Roxy Regional Theatre, including Evita, Peter Pan, Grease, Pump Boys and Dinettes, Nunsense, Anything Goes, Sweeny Todd, 1940’s Radio Hour and Julius Caesar. She also appeared again in 1940’s Radio Hour at Belmont University. Now an East Nashville resident, McCarthy is a sales rep with Ameritas Life Insurance Corporation.

Kelli Workman, assistant director of Music at The Renaissance Center, serves as musical director for the show while Harp and Katherine Jett are choreographers.

8-Track is like getting to go back and relive all the hottest concerts you got to go to during the 1970s,” said Harp. “If you bought an 8-track tape anytime during that decade, you are sure to hear some of your favorite music during this show.”

From the Doobie Brothers and the Eagles to Three Dog Night and Bread, from Marvin Gaye and James Taylor to Roberta Flack and Debbie Boone, from Elton John and Billy Joel to Melissa Manchester and Helen Reddy, 8-Track: The Sounds of the 70’s covers the entire spectrum of the decade’s music tastes.

And, of course, there’s disco.

Rose Royce, Gloria Gaynor, the Village People, the Bee Gees, K.C. and the Sunshine Band and many more will get you up and doing The Hustle.

And always, have a nice day!
