Release Date: 6/28/2006. Expired: 7/30/2006

Considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, Guys and Dolls is an oddball romantic comedy that soars with the spirit of Broadway through a cast of vivid characters who have become theatre standards.

The Renaissance Players bring the classic Guys and Dolls to the stage of The Renaissance Center in Dickson July 14-30. Performances are 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $7 for children under 13. A special lunch matinee will be at 12 p.m. Saturday, July 22, with $17 tickets that include lunch and the show.

The Renaissance Players production is directed by Pacer Harp, managing director of the Gaslight Dinner Theatre who last directed the community production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

Jenny Diamond, director of The Renaissance Center’s children’s and community choirs, is musical director for the production and Marci Murphree, a dance instructor at the center, is choreographer.

Based on a story and characters developed by Damon Runyon, Guys and Dolls was written by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling with Frank Loesser writing the music and lyrics. The score includes classic songs like Luck Be a Lady, Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat, Adelaide’s Lament, If I Were a Bell and the title song.

Guys and Dolls tells the story of a group of small-time gamblers and the ladies in their lives. Nathan Detroit (Flynt Foster) bets his pal Sky Masterson (Ryan Hunt) that he can’t make the next lady he sees fall in love with him. And when the next “doll” happens to be the prim and proper neighborhood missionary Sarah Brown (Katherine Jett), the stage is set for an evening of high spirited entertainment, set to the toe-tapping beat of Loesser’s superlative score. In addition to constantly looking for a place to hold his infamous floating crap game, Detroit has to deal with the complaints of nightclub performer Adelaide (Sara Schoch), his chronically ill fiancée whose condition is brought on by the fact that they’ve been engaged for 14 years.

Guys and Dolls debuted in 1950 and ran for 1,200 shows over three years. It picked up five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical (Robert Alda), Best Supporting Actress (Isabel Bigley) and Best Director (George S. Kaufman).

A 1955 movie version starring Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Vivian Blaine and Stubby Kaye received four Oscar nominations.

The show was revived in 1997 with an African-American cast featuring Robert Guilluame and a Motown-tinged score. A 1992 revival featuring Nathan Lane, Peter Gallagher and Faith Prince won four Tony Awards. The show is currently selling out at the Piccadilly Theatre in London and will feature Patrick Swayze as Nathan Detroit this summer.
