Classic Jane Eyre to take Renaissance Center stage

Release Date: 10/10/2001. Expired: 10/27/2001

A young orphan being raised by her wealthy but cruel aunt, and the subsequent travels and adventures catalogued in this courageous young woman’s coming of age come to life in The Renaissance Center Repertory Company’s original stage adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s classic novel Jane Eyre.

Published in 1847, Jane Eyre is said by some to be roughly autobiographical of the author. It is the story of an intelligent, honest, plain-featured young girl forced to contend with oppression, inequality and hardship as she meets with a series of people who threaten her autonomy. Through her long journey from the “red-room” where her cruel aunt kept her until she was 10 years old, to the school where she learned and then taught, and on to her life as a governess at Thornfield, she repeatedly succeeds in asserting herself, maintaining her principles of justice, human dignity and morality. Her strong belief in gender and social equality challenges the Victorian prejudices against women and the poor of the period and she eventually moves to Ferndean where she cares for Mr. Rochester, the master of the manor and the man who would become her husband.

Adapted for the stage by Kim Leavitt, director of Theatre Education at The Renaissance Center, and directed by Jan Y. Dial, director of the Theatre and Drama Department, Jane Eyre will stage in the Performance Hall for one show only Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.
