The Jimmy Awards for the 2003-04 Renaissance Players community theatre season will be handed out at the 3rd annual Renaissance Players Gala at The Renaissance Center on Aug. 10.

Named for the late Dr. Jimmy Jackson, founder and original board chairman of The Renaissance Center, the Jimmy Awards are presented annually to community theatre participants in both on-stage and behind-the-scenes roles. Categories include Best Actor and Actress in a Play and a Musical, Best Young Actor and Actress, Best Actor and Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Featured Actor and Actress and others.

The Renaissance Players Gala begins at 6 p.m. with a reception in The Renaissance Center’s rotunda, followed by the presentation of the Jimmy Awards in the Performance Hall. Invitations are being sent to all Renaissance Players participants. “The Renaissance Players continue to grow with more than 400 people participating in one way or another,” said Amy Arrington, managing director of the Renaissance Players and producer for their shows. “The Jimmy Awards were begun as a way to recognize participants for their efforts and to honor everyone who takes part in our shows with a special evening. We roll out the red carpet, put together a nice reception and have a fun time looking back at our past season and getting excited about our upcoming season.”

The 2003-04 Renaissance Players season consisted of productions of The Mousetrap, Cinderella, The Miracle Worker and The Wizard of Oz. Nominations in each category will be sent to Renaissance Players members who will vote on the award winners to be presented at the gala.

The Renaissance Players 2004-05 season will include Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, A Christmas Carol, Jesus Christ Superstar, Faith County and Fiddler on the Roof.

The Renaissance Players Gala is free and open to anyone who has participated in or is interested in becoming a part of the Renaissance Players, but an RSVP is required.
